Jay Alter (born 1994) is an American sports broadcaster known for his work with ESPN . Since joining the network in 2018, he has become a versatile voice across multiple sports, including college football, men's basketball, women's lacrosse, and NFL coverage on ESPN Radio..[1]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Alter was born and raised in Darien, Connecticut. He graduated from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 2016 with a degree in broadcast journalism.[2] During his time at Syracuse, he gained extensive experience through student-run outlets, serving as sports director at both WAER and WJPZ-FM (Z89).[3]
Career

[edit]After college, Alter worked as a weekend sports anchor for News 12 Connecticut and called games for the BIG EAST Digital Network.[2]
ESPN (2018–present)
[edit]Since joining ESPN in 2018, Alter has become a versatile voice across several sports:[2]
- College Football: Alter has called games in every FBS conference, from midweek MACtion to the SEC.
- College Basketball: He is widely recognized for his work in ACC men's basketball, calling dozens of games each season. He was on the mic for the first-ever men's basketball broadcast on ACC Network when it launched in 2019. His basketball assignments have also included Feast Week, Champ Week, and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.[4]
- Lacrosse: A regular voice for men's and women's college lacrosse, Alter has served as the lead play-by-play announcer for the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship. since 2021.[4]
- Premier Lacrosse League (PLL): He has also called Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) games on ESPN and ABC[4]
- NFL on ESPN Radio: Alter has called select NFL games, most notably the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots that decided the AFC East title.[5]
Other Ventures
[edit]In 2024, Alter launched Rearview Mirror Productions, a creative studio focused on original storytelling projects outside of live game coverage.
Personal Life
[edit]Jay Alter lives in Darien, Connecticut, with his wife, Liz, and their daughter, Ellie. He remains closely connected to his hometown, often participating in local events and community activities.
