Jerzy Andrzej Filar[6] (born 30 of August 1949 in Warsaw (Żoliborz)[7] is an Australian mathematician with Polish origin known for his contributions in operations research, stochastic modelling, game theory, Markov decision processes, perturbation theory and environmental modeling.[8]
Biography
[edit]His early schooling was Primary School no 1 in Warsaw[9]. In 1864 he moved to Melbourne, Australia, where he attended Kew High School (KHS). At this school, his mathematical interests, despite his poor knowledge of English at the time, were formed by Mr. Ed Conway. In 1972 he graduated B.Sc (Hons) in Mathematical Statistics at University of Melbourne, and in 1975 M.Sc. Statistics, Monash University and in 1977 M.A. Mathematics at University of Illinois, Chicago.
Academic career
[edit]At this university, in 1980, he defended his doctorate based on the thesis Algorithms for Solving Undiscounted Stochastic Games[10][11]. His advisor was Thirukkannamangai Eachambadi S. Raghavan[12].
Since 1975, he has been working at various positions[13]:
- 1975-76 Tutor (full-time), Dept. of Mathematics, Monash University, Clayton, Victoria.
- 1979-80 Visiting Assistant Prof., Dept. of AS, University of Minnesota, St. Paul/Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- 1980-86 Assistant Prof., Dept. of Math. Sci., The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland.
- 1986-90 Associate Prof., Dept. of Math. & Stat., University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore, Maryland.
- 1986-1989 Director of Graduate Programs in Math. & Stat., ibid.
- 1990-91 Prof., Dept. of Math. & Stat., ibid.
- 1992-2000 Prof. of Math, & Stat., School of Mathematics, University of South Australia.
- 1994 - 1998 Director, Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM), Univ. of South Australia.
- 1998-1999 Associate Dean (Research), Fac. of Information Technology, Univ. of South Australia.
- 2001-2011 Foundation Chair of Math. & Stat, School of Mathematics, Univ. of South Australia.
- 2007 Director of Research, Institute for Sustainable Systems and Technologies, Univ. of South Australia
- 2011-2016 Strategic Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, Flinders University.
- 2016-2020 Professor of Applied Mathematics and Director of CARM, University of Queensland.
Editorial Works
[edit]He has been working at various positions in projects related to academic publishing activities[14][15]:
- Editor-in-Chief: Environmental Modeling and Assessment, Springer (ERA2010-B)[16].
- Honorary Theme Editor for Theme 6.3 "Mathematical Models" of UNESCO's Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS)[17].
- Associate Editor: Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, Elsevier (ERA2010-A)[18].
- Associate Editor: Operations Research, INFORMS (ERA2010-A*: 2011-2015)[19]
- Associate Editor: Dynamic Games and Applications[20], Springer.
- Associate Editor: Applicationes Mathematicae[21] (well established Polish journal founded by the renowned mathematician Hugo Steinhaus).
- Co-editor: International Game Theory Reviews, World Scientific.
- International Society of Dynamic Games, Annals of Dynamic Games[22]
Research impacts
[edit]Jerzy A. Filar[23][24] is a broadly trained applied mathematician with research interests spanning a spectrum of both theoretical and applied topics in Operations Research, Stochastic Modelling, Optimization, Game Theory and Environmental Modelling. He was the advisor of 31 PhD thesis[10][6][25]. He published 148 works[26][27]: articles[28], chapters in books(23), books(6)[29][30] and conference publications (16). He took retirement in 1998 and was writing academic books on statistics and the game theory.
In his last role as CARM Director, Jerzy A. Filar and the team are partnered with Queensland’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) to equip their stock assessments with the very latest statistical and mathematical modelling methodologies to support the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy. They offered mathematical and statistical modelling as well as computer simulations, giving an effective and risk-free approach to estimate likely impacts of any proposed change.
Science Fiction Novelist
[edit]Since 2000 Jerzy A. Filar[31] is Emeritus Professor of Applied Mathematics and a Fellow of the Australian Mathematical Society with longstanding interest in environmental and natural resource modelling. His teaching and research experience, in both USA and Australia, gives him a special perspective on the conflict between Western technological society and sustainability of Earth’s life support systems, which is exacerbated by fundamentalist religious views. These gave him a background to write a fiction book[7][32].
In the sense of Mathematical Genealogy, that traces lineages of mentorship through generations, he is humbled, yet grateful, to be a descendant of illustrious scientists such as Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton, Ronald Fisher and other remarkable antecedents[7].
