Karen Horting is the executive director and chief executive officer of the Society of Women Engineers who overlooks the fund development activities for the organization, holding her position since December 31, 2013.[1]

Education and career

Prior to joining the Society of Women Engineers, Horting earned her degree in Bachelor Science in Biology from Northern Illinois University and her MBA from Johns Hopkins University. Horting worked at the American Association for the Advancement of Science managing marketing and fund development for Science’s Next Wave, a website for postdoctoral researchers and graduate students in science, mathematics and technology.[1]

In 2004, Horting served as Deputy Executive Director at SWE until 2013. In March, she joined the Society of Women Engineers serving as the director of strategic planning.[1]

In 2013, she became the executive director and chief executive officer of the Society of Women Engineers in December 31.[1]

Horting currently serves on the Leadership Circle of the 50K Coalition, FIRST Robotics Board of Directors, STEM Ed Coalition Board of Directors, Engineering CAS Diversity Advisory Board and the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business Dean’s Alumni Advisory Board.[1]

Advocacy

On May 30, 2024, Horting addressed that "almost 40% of female engineers leave the engineering workforce by midcareer" in an interview. One of the factors she stated that cause the negative impact on the workplace climate is implicit or unconscious bias, which affects the hiring, promotions and compensation for women in engineering.[2]
