From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lachlan Buchbach is an Australian rugby league footballer who plays as a five-eighth for the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Rugby League's Mal Meninga Cup and the inaugural NRLQ U20s competition. He is a member of the Dolphins' NRL Academy and a former Queensland Under-17 City and Emerging Under-18 Origin representative.

Early life

[edit]

Buchbach grew up in the Beenleigh and Logan area of South-East Queensland. He began playing rugby league at the age of six for the Beenleigh Lions.[1] He later played junior football for Logan Brothers while attending Marsden State High School. He transferred to Mabel Park State High School in Year 10 to participate in the Allan Langer Cup schoolboys competition.[1] He has credited his development to his school coaches and noted the challenge of traveling from Beenleigh to training during his early years.[1]

Playing career

[edit]

Mal Meninga Cup

[edit]

Buchbach debuted in the Mal Meninga Cup (QRL Under-19s) in 2023 with Souths Logan Magpies, scoring a try in his only appearance.[2] He joined the Redcliffe Dolphins in 2024 and became a regular starting five-eighth. Over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, he played 21 games and scored eight tries.[2]

In 2025, Buchbach was named captain of the Redcliffe Mal Meninga Cup side by coach Scott Murray.[1] Under his leadership, the Dolphins reached the grand final, where they were defeated by Burleigh.[3]

NRLQ U20s

[edit]

Following his performances in the Mal Meninga Cup, Buchbach was named in the Dolphins' squad for the inaugural NRL Queensland Under-20s competition in 2025.[4] He played at five-eighth and was part of a group of academy players preparing for potential professional contracts.

Representative career

[edit]

In September 2023, Buchbach was selected for the Queensland City Under-17 side for the annual City vs Country representative fixture.[5]

In 2024, he was named in the Queensland Rugby League's Emerging Under-18 Origin squad.[6] This squad features 30 of the most promising players in the state and is part of the Queensland State of Origin pathway.

Playing style

[edit]

Buchbach plays primarily as a five-eighth. He is known for his composure, leadership, playmaking ability and shows shades of a young Tom Dearden. As captain, he has been praised for guiding younger players and leading through example on and off the field.[1]

Personal life

[edit]

Buchbach is a product of South-East Queensland rugby league pathways. He attended Mabel Park SHS and has been involved in high-level schoolboy competitions throughout his development.[1]
