[edit]

Generally, only nearby supernova explosions are visible to the naked eye.

Supernova Type Distance Apparent brightness Observation Date Notes
SN 1987A (Sanduleak Supernova) 167,000 light-years (1.58×1018 km; 9.8×1017 mi) 1987 Blue supergiant Sanduleak -69° 202 exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Brightest supernova since Kepler Supernova. [1]
SN 1604 (Kepler's Supernova) Observed by Johannes Kepler
SN 1572 (Tycho's Supernova) Observed by Tycho Brahe
SN 1054 (Crab Supernova) 1054–1056 The star exploded in 1054, with the glow visible through into 1056. The remnants are now known as the Crab Nebula and Crab Pulsar.
