Albert Liu (Chinese: 劉峻誠; born April 14, 1981) is an electronic engineer and computer scientist, best known as the founder and chairman of Kneron Inc.[1] He is also a senior member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).[2] Liu is credited with inventing several groundbreaking technologies, including single-layer multi-point capacitive touch panels, low-power optical drive integrated with high-frequency circuits, and a reconfigurable deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) architecture. These innovations have been widely adopted in the industry and incorporated into solutions for leading brands such as Samsung, Qualcomm, and MStar, powering multiple generations of smartphones. Collectively, his commercialized technologies have been deployed in over a billion devices and featured on channels like CNBC.[3][4][5]

Liu specializes in fields such as computer-aided design, artificial intelligence, very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design, touchscreen panels, image processing, electronic simulation, algorithm development, and advanced high-speed semiconductor manufacturing.[6] His reconfigurable AI chip architecture earned him the IEEE Darlington Award, the highest honor from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS).

Liu's book, Artificial Intelligence Hardware Design: Challenges and Solutions, was ranked 6th on CNN and Forbes' lists of the 100 most influential AI books worldwide.[7]

Biography

[edit]

Education

[edit]

During his studies, Albert Liu received the Raytheon Company Scholarship and the University of California Scholarship, as well as the IBM 2007 Problem Solving Award (world champion) for his use of the EIP tool suite in an international competition. He was also nominated for two international journal Best Paper Awards—at the IEEE/ACM ICCAD 2007 and IEEE ICCD 2008. [8] Additionally, Liu earned the IEEE CAS Society’s highest honor, the IEEE TCAS Darlington Award, and in 2023, he received the IEEE CTSoc Corporate Innovation Leadership Award.[9]

Career

[edit]

Teaching

[edit]

Albert Liu has been active in academia, industry, and technology. He has delivered guest lectures and courses on computer vision, artificial intelligence, and intelligent hardware at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He has also served as a technical reviewer for numerous international academic journals and held positions as a research scientist at UCLA and as a visiting professor at National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, and National Cheng Kung University.[10][11]

Research

[edit]

Liu participated in Samsung Electronics' Distinguished International Talent Program and R&D center in South Korea, contributing to the development of key technologies for the first-generation Galaxy smartphones and core single-layer touch panel technologies for MStar Semiconductor.[12][13] He also worked at Qualcomm's Multimedia R&D Center, focusing on terminal AI technology development. Liu collaborated on frontier technology projects with organizations such as the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA),[14] Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Bell Labs [14], NASA, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). His work has resulted in numerous influential patents and academic publications in areas including smartphones, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and advanced semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs). [14][15]

In 2021, Liu and his team developed a reconfigurable AI chip architecture that earned the IEEE TCAS Darlington Award, and in 2023, he received the IEEE CTSoc Corporate Innovation Leadership Award.[11]

Entrepreneurship

[edit]

In 2007, Albert Lui co-founded Wireless Infor, which was acquired by VanceInfo Technologies Inc. in 2009 and subsequently listed on the NASDAQ. In 2015, Liu co-founded Kneron Inc. with Zhang Mao-Zhong. Kneron specializes in edge computing AI technologies and was recognized by CB Insights in 2019 as one of 36 companies with world-changing technologies.[16] The company was also named an Edge AI Innovator by Gartner.

In 2020, Kneron’s chips were ranked among the world's top 10 AI chips by EE Times[17], alongside products from Intel, Nvidia, Texas Instruments, and NXP Semiconductors. Additionally, CRN listed Kneron, Intel, and Nvidia as the world's top 5 AI chipmakers, while IoT Times ranked Kneron alongside Intel and Texas Instruments as the world’s top 3 AI chipmakers.[18][19]

Media

[edit]

In 2016, Albert Liu was invited to participate in the inaugural season of Tencent and Zhejiang Television's Chinese reality show "I Am the Founder".[20][21]

He also subsequently gave a Ted Talk in 2024 at TEDxLinkou to speak about his founding experiences.[22]
