The Lost Atlantis Experience is a privately operated museum in Megalochori, Santorini, Greece. Opened in 2019, it explores the hypothesis that the Minoan eruption of Santorini’s volcano (c. 1600 BCE) inspired Plato's account of Atlantis. The museum combines interactive exhibits, multimedia installations, and archaeological replicas to present theories linking the island’s history to the Atlantis myth.[1]
History and Concept
[edit]The museum established in May of 2019[2][3][4] and it's based on the hypothesis that the catastrophic eruption of Santorini's volcano may have inspired Plato's account of Atlantis. Some researchers suggest that the sudden decline of the Minoan civilization on ancient Thera (modern-day Santorini) aligns with descriptions of Atlantis' destruction found in classical texts. The Lost Atlantis Experience was founded to present this theory through interactive exhibits and to encourage exploration of the possible historical basis of the Atlantis myth along Santorini's history and geology.
A theory popularized by 20th-century archaeologists like Spyridon Marinatos.[5] Its creation coincided with renewed interest in Santorini’s Minoan ruins following UNESCO’s recognition of the island’s archaeological sites.[6]
Educational Elements
[edit]The Lost Atlantis Experience offers educational programs, workshops, and guided tours[7] addressing archaeological, geological, and cultural topics related to Atlantis' myth, Minoan culture and Santorini.
