Mubashshir Ahmad (born Tursunov Alisher Ahmadovich; January 1, 1974) is an Uzbek Islamic scholar, editor, and publisher. He founded the Central Asian Peoples' Ezan Foundation, the information-analytical portal Azon.uz, and its successor, Azon Global. Ahmad has authored and translated several books on Islamic theology and jurisprudence. In 2025, he faced legal issues in Uzbekistan, including being declared a wanted person and subsequent deportation from Turkey.[1][2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Mubashshir Ahmad was born on January 1, 1974, in Namangan, Namangan Region, Uzbek SSR. His father, Ahmad Muhammad Tursun, was a writer and journalist known for religious and educational works.[3] Ahmad studied at the Tashkent Islamic Institute from 1991 to 1996 and later attended Al-Azhar University in Egypt.[4] Between 2002 and 2015, he studied under Muhammad Sadik Muhammad Yusuf, receiving several religious certifications.[5]

Career

[edit]

From 1996 to 2014, Ahmad taught Hanafi Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh, inheritance law, and Naqshbandi Sufism at the Tashkent Islamic Institute. He served as an editor and writer for the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan's publications, including Hidayat magazine and Islom Nuri newspaper. In April 2018, he was dismissed from his role as deputy director of the board's secretariat.[4][6]

Ahmad founded several media and publishing ventures, including "Fikrat" and "Qaqnus Media" publishing houses, the Azon.uz portal (2017), "Azon FM" online radio, and "Azon TV" (2019).[7] By 2023, "Azon TV" was among Uzbekistan's top three YouTube channels by subscriber count, according to the Yuksalish Nationwide Movement.[8] He also established "Azon Travel," "Azon Books," "Moida by Azon" café, and the "Mezana International Islamic Sciences Academy" in Istanbul, Turkey.

[edit]

Launched in September 2017, Azon.uz was a prominent Uzbek media outlet focusing on religious and educational content, attracting 400,000–500,000 monthly visitors.[9][10] In 2021, Ahmad reported pressure from the Committee on Religious Affairs over the portal's content, which was condemned by media advocate Komil Allamjonov.[11] The committee denied issuing any directives to remove articles.[12] That June, Ahmad and other Azon.uz staff were fined for publishing religious materials deemed to affect Uzbekistan's foreign relations.[13][14] The portal ceased operations in August 2023, and Ahmad launched Azon Global later that year.[9][15]

Arrest and deportation

[edit]

On December 28, 2023, Ahmad was detained in Istanbul, Turkey, on suspicion of posing a "threat to public security" and held at the Binkılıç Deportation Center.[16] He was released on February 21, 2024.[17] In February 2025, Uzbekistan's Ministry of Internal Affairs listed him as wanted under Article 244-3 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan for illegal distribution of religious materials, correcting an earlier erroneous charge of extremism.[18] On May 8, 2025, he was arrested again in Turkey and deported to Uzbekistan on May 10, where he was detained.[2]

Publications

[edit]

Ahmad has authored and translated works on Islamic theology and jurisprudence, including:

  • Islamic Civilization (2022), a history of Islamic scholarly contributions.[19]
  • Scholar, Universe, and Human (2021), a collection of scholarly reflections.
  • Translation of Al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din (8 volumes, 2022).
  • Led the translation of the Great Fiqh Encyclopedia.[19]
