His teaching emphasizes cross-disciplinary learning and design experimentation, particularly in structural design and digital fabrication.
Philosophy and Research
[edit]Nicolas Sterling advocates for the seamless interdisciplinary integration of architectural and engineering design. His research promotes a fully integrated design approach, where disciplines “cross over” and “interchange” from the earliest conceptual stages through to project development and construction. He often refers to the notion of 'creative abrasion' to describe the value of intellectual interplay in design processes. His architectural research focuses on structural and material expression, natural patterns, lightness, sustainable design, and the use of analog and digital tools in both conceptual and construction development.[1]
