Pepita Group is a Hungarian e-commerce company that operates the multivendor marketplace Pepita in eight Central and Eastern European countries. Launched in 2019 as a baby-goods webshop, it now sells consumer electronics, home and leisure products, and other mass-market categories.[1]

History

[edit]

Entrepreneurs József Dorcsinecz and Zoltán Varga, best known for co-founding the travel portal Szallas.hu, set up Pepita in Budapest in 2019.[1] Within three years the catalogue grew to more than two million stock-keeping units.[2]

Operations

[edit]

Pepita maintains country-level storefronts in Hungary, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria and Croatia. By the first quarter of 2024 it worked with about 1,500 active third-party vendors.[3] Besides the core domains the group runs the deal site black.friday.hu and the parenting portal babafalva.hu.[4]

Scale

[edit]

Market-research firm GKID ranked Pepita 12th among Hungary’s largest online retailers for 2022 and noted that the company’s turnover increased by more than 70 percent year-on-year.[5] Pepita’s gross merchandise value for 2022 was HUF 15 billion (about €38 million).[a] [2]

Recognition

[edit]

Pepita was placed 16th in the “Companies to Watch” category of Deloitte’s 2023 Technology Fast 50 Central Europe programme, reflecting cumulative revenue growth of 237 percent.[6][7]

Funding

[edit]

In March 2020 the venture-capital arm of OTP Bank, PortfoLion Capital Partners, acquired a minority stake in Pepita to support further growth.[8]
