Born in Gulfport, Mississippi, Potter sang at New Bethel Baptist Church in Biloxi, Mississippi before signing a two-year contract with the Graz Opera Company in Austria in 1974.
She was a graduate assistant at Southern Illinois University. She sang leading roles in the university’s operas and won grants from WGN in Chicago and the American Opera Guild. She had supporting roles at the Metropolitan. Toured in Europe performing American operas.[2]
She performed in William Grant Still's American opera A Bayou Legend set in a Creole village in Mississippi.
