Ranjit Dheer (3 October 1942 ) is a British politician, writer, scholar and lecturer of Indian origin who has lived in the United Kingdom for the last 58 years. He is one of the longest serving local government councillors in the U.K. who has served in many senior government roles including as Mayor ( 2001–2002 ), and as Deputy Leader of Ealing's Labour group/Deputy Leader of Ealing council ( 2005–2018. He was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II with the award of the Order of the British Empire - O.B.E. -(2018 ) for his services to local government.

EARLY life

Ranjit Dheer was born in India and moved to the United Kingdom on Christmas Day in 1966. He spent his early years in a village so small even having no school. He was able to pass his Matriculation examination from a secondary school when his parents moved to a small town Moga Punjab . He completed his graduation degree from D.M. College, Moga, and subsequently did a two-year master's degree in English Literature at Punjab University, Chandigarh, India. Then he worked as a lecturer in English in various colleges, eventually leaving his post at Government College, Muktsar ( Punjab) to migrate to the United Kingdom in 1966.Subseuently he joined Bristol University for a post graduate teacher training course ( P.G.C.E. ).an was appointed as a teacher by the then Inner London Education Authority on completion of this course.Simultaneously he continued in adding to his qualifications, first, by completing a Diploma in Multi- cultural Education from London university, and, subsequently an M.A. in Urban Education from London university. He progressed to Advisory and Inspector posts and was eventually appointed as an assistant director of Education in Southwark in London. Later, he moved away from London and became a Director of Race Equality in Wycombe district of Buckinghamshire county council.

Ranjit Dheer was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1979 by The Lord Chancellor and he regularly provided services as a Magistrate in Ealing and other courts in the Middlesex commission area for thirty two years until 2012. The Lord Chancellor also appointed him a Member of Employment Tribunals and he sat in the central London courts for twenty years until 2012.

Political carrire

Alongside his professional work, he was able to develop an active political career in local government. He first became a councillor in 1982, and has served Ealing council in London in many senior roles in the past forty years - as a school governor, Committee chair, Cabinet Member, Deputy Leader of the council, Deputy Mayor and Mayor. Queen Elizabeth II honoured him with the award of the Order of the British Empire ( O.B.E. ) in 2018 for services to local government. In the same year, Ealing council bestowed upon him its highest honour - Hon. Freeman of the Borough.

Literary Carrier

He is also a well known Punjabi writer who has written seven books. He was awarded the prestigious Gurbux Singh Preetlari award in 2021 for his book "Walaiton NikSuk" by the Languages Department of Punjab Government. He was also the main organiser and President of the historic first ever World Punjabi Writers Conference held in Britain in 1980. NOTABLE LITERARY WORKS

One of his books, WILATON NIKSUK was awarded the prestigious Gurbux Singh Preetlari award for the best prose book of 2021 by the Government of Punjab. The Delhi Punjabi Sahit Sabha also awarded him their annual prize for 2016. The Punjabi Council of Australia honoured him with the award of PUNJABIAT DA MAAN ( Pride of Punjabiat ) in 2009. He was also instrumental in introducing Punjabi language teaching in Ealing schools in the Eighties of the last century. He also organised, with help of his friends, the first ever historic World Punjabi Writers Conference in the U.K. in 1980.
