Comment: Nevada Today isn't independent, considering one of the pieces cited the subject wrote themselves. Tenshi! (Talk page) 17:26, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

Riley Gillis (born 2004)[1] is an American infectious disease researcher and romantic pianist who founded the Nevada Medical Research Consortium, of which he is the director and chairman.[2]
Early life, education, and early career
[edit]Riley Gillis was born in Reno, Nevada in 2004.[1] He has one brother, Spencer Gillis, a West Point graduate and mechanical engineer.[3] At a young age, Gillis had a speech impediment and saw a speech language pathologist.[4] At 8, Gillis was enrolled in the School Within A School (SWAS) program for "highly and profoundly gifted children" in the Washoe County School District.[4][5]
Gillis attended Procter R. Hug High School, a predominantly hispanic and low-income high school in Reno, NV.[6] In 2021, Gillis was elected to be an American Legion Boys Nation Senator for the State of Nevada and worked in Washington D.C. on health legislation.[7] He graduated as class Salutatorian.[8]

In 2022, Gillis enrolled in the Microbiology & Immunology program at the University of Nevada, Reno, a joint initiative between the Nevada School of Medicine and College of Science.[9][10] In 2023, Gillis was awarded a National Institutes of Health research fellowship (NIH T34 MARC)[6][9] and in 2024 he founded the Nevada Medical Research Consortium, serving as its inagural director and chairman.[2][11] Gillis studies novel rapid diagnostics and therapeutics for emerging infectious diseases and biothreats, including Category A weapons of mass destruction.[12][13] At the age of 20, he became the first and only undergraduate at Nevada to be Biosafety Level 3 trained for high containment work with lethal pathogens.[4] Gillis is a member of the Phi Delta Epsilon medical fraternity and the Delta Omega society.[14][15]
Gillis was awarded the Sam Lieberman Regents Award by the Nevada System of Higher Education in 2025.[4] State officials noted his work leading novel treatment research for severe multi-drug resistant fungal pathogens affecting Nevada, and diagnostic research for other diseases including Ebola.[12][16]
Musical career
[edit]In 2020 and 2022, Gillis won the Reno-Tahoe Piano Competition.[17][18] He was a principal pianist, harpsichordist, and featured soloist of the Northern Nevada String Serenade, the Ruby Mountain Symphony Orchestra,[9] and the Reno Pops Orchestra.[19] In 2024, Gillis released a classical music album featuring romantic works by Franz Liszt.[9]
