From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Brennand, English-born classical double-bass player. (1910–1984) His father, Charles Brennand Sr., brought the family from England in 1919. He was the principal double-bass player with the New York Philharmonic.

Robert "Bobby" Brennand joined the NYPhil in 1933, and at the time was the only Englishman to have joined the orchestra.[1] .[2].[3][4][5] He served as the principal player from 1952 and stayed in the orchestra until 1975.[6]

Brennand was also an admired teacher; a former student Donald Palma became a faculty member at the New England Conservatory.[7] Brennand served on the faculty of the Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music.[8]

Robert was one of four brothers, all of whom became professional orchestra players. Thomas, the oldest, was a principal violist with the Cleveland Orchestra.[9] William was a leading cellist with the National Symphony Orchestra. Charles "Charlie" Brennand,[10] was cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Philadelphia String Quartet. Two of Charlie's three daughters became professional cellists: Meg Brennand.[11] and Anne Brennand.[12]
