Ryan Huling (born March 30, 1984) is an American writer and media commentator focused on sustainable food systems, animal rights, and international exploration. He has authored opinion columns for Nature,[2] Wired,[3] USA Today,[4] Trends in Cell Biology,[5] the South China Morning Post,[6] The Nikkei,[7] and Nikkei Asia,[8] and been interviewed by NBC News,[9] Fox News,[10][11] and Reuters.[12]

Career

[edit]

Huling is currently a senior writer for the Asia-Pacific office of The Good Food Institute,[13] a think tank that accelerates development of plant-based and cultivated meat. He worked to align dozens of regional cellular agriculture companies behind the nomenclature "cultivated" to describe foods grown directly from animal cells,[14] which according to Food Ingredients First, has since become the consensus terminology.[15] Prior to joining GFI, he served as an international expert on nutrition and sustainable food systems for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations[16] and a director at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).[17]

Huling's writing has been cited by think tanks focused on food and climate change[18][19] and academic journals such as Science of Food and Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence.[20][21] In 2026, Avery, an imprint of Penguin Group, is scheduled to publish his nonfiction travelogue, The Hidden Nations of Animals, which was developed in collaboration with cartographer Oliver Uberti.[22]

Personal life

[edit]

In addition to his food and animal advocacy work, BuzzFeed notes that Huling is an "avid" traveler.[23] As of June 2025, he says that he has visited more than 50 countries and all 50 US states.[24]

Selected publications

[edit]
  • In Asia, alternative proteins are the new clean energy[25] (with Doris Lee, Wasamon Nutakul, Samuel Goh, 2024)
  • Cultivated meat: research opportunities to advance cell line development[26] (with Maanasa Ravikumar, Dean Powell, 2024)
