SELCO Foundation is a not-for-profit public charitable trust based in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, focused on providing sustainable energy solutions to underserved communities.[2] Established in 2010, the foundation works to alleviate poverty by improving access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy, particularly in rural and low-income areas across India.[3]
History
[edit]Founded on 5 October 2010 by Harish Hande, SELCO Foundation emerged from the work of SELCO India, a for-profit social enterprise, to create an open-source platform for sustainable energy solutions.[4] The foundation was established to address energy access gaps for underserved communities, building on SELCO India’s experience of installing over 450,000 solar systems. It has since expanded its reach to states like Karnataka, Odisha, and Jharkhand, and internationally to countries like Tanzania and the Philippines.[5]
Initiatives
[edit]SELCO Foundation develops and deploys clean energy solutions to enhance livelihoods, healthcare, and education in under-resourced communities. Its key initiatives include: Healthcare Energy Solutions: The foundation has powered over 4,000 health centres across India with solar energy, focusing on maternal labour rooms and vaccine storage, in collaboration with state governments and partners like the IKEA Foundation.[6]
Livelihood Support: It provides solar-powered technologies, such as sewing machines, pottery wheels, and agri-processing machines, benefiting over 900,000 people by improving income opportunities.[7]
Ecosystem Development: The foundation collaborates with over 200 partners, including governments and NGOs, to create sustainable business models and advocate for energy-inclusive policies.[8]
The foundation’s work has reached over 7.5 million people through direct and indirect energy interventions, with a goal to impact 10 million by 2027.[9]
Recognition
[edit]SELCO Foundation has received recognition for its innovative approach, including support from the MacArthur Foundation for its Sustainable Energy-led Climate Action Program in Odisha and Jharkhand.[10] Its models have been adopted in India and replicated in Africa and Southeast Asia, earning praise for linking sustainable energy to poverty alleviation.[11]
