Inspired by legendary Indian boxers, he trained rigorously to make a mark in international boxing. Outside of boxing, he enjoys fitness training, mentoring young athletes, and promoting boxing in India.
Professional Boxing Career
[edit]Sabari began his professional boxing career on November 20, 2020, with a victory over Rakesh Krishnan in Bangalore. Over the next year, he won multiple bouts, including a significant win against Akashdeep Singh on December 21, 2021, to claim the WBC India Welterweight Title in Hyderabad.
On May 22, 2022, he successfully defended his title by defeating Michael Pengue at The Snakepit Stadium, Wollongong. Later that year, on December 12, 2022, Sabari retained his WBC India Welterweight title with a decisive win over HC Lalramfela at the Rotary Boxing – Pune Fight Night held at MIT ADT University, Pune. The fight was streamed worldwide via the World Boxing Council’s 24/7 Live Channel and Facebook page.
In early 2023, he faced international competition, winning bouts against Apisit Sangmuang and Khashaiar Ghassemi. However, he suffered his first professional loss on April 23, 2023, against Fatih Keles in a bout for the vacant WBC Asian Super Welterweight Title in Trabzon, Turkey.
Sabari continued his journey with a notable win over Rattakorn Tassaworn in Bangkok on February 7, 2025. A few days later, on February 10, 2025, he won the World Boxing Council's Australasia Title in the Welterweight division by defeating Australian champion Michael Pengue in Sydney. Pengue was the favorite, coming into the event with two consecutive wins, including his WBC Australasia title win in December 2021 over compatriot Jorge Kapeen.
Sabari dominated Pengue from the first bell, out-punching him in every round. By the eighth round, Pengue was exhausted, and Sabari knocked him out at 2 minutes and 11 seconds. At the time of stoppage, Sabari was leading on the scorecards, with two out of three judges scoring in his favor.
Following this victory, Sabari Jaishankar became the third Indian to enter the ranking list issued by the World Boxing Council (WBC). In their latest monthly rankings, Sabari has been placed at the 36th position. He is currently the only Indian boxer in the WBC world rankings and the third Indian overall after Olympic medallist Vijender Singh (WBO rankings) and Neeraj Goyat (WBC) in 2016.
