Salfeld Child Control is parental control software for Windows and Android. The software has existed since the early 2000s, with an initial version for Windows 9x. It has been available for Android devices since 2015. The software is designed to help parents manage their children's screen time and filter content on digital devices.

Overview

[edit]

Salfeld Child Control enables parents to manage and monitor their children's use of digital devices. It offers features such as screen time management, safe browsing, and synchronization across multiple devices. The software is compatible with Microsoft Windows and Android systems.

History

[edit]

The company Salfeld, based in Germany, has been developing parental control programs since the 2000s.[1]. The first version of Salfeld Child Control was launched for Windows 9x[2], and it has been regularly adapted for subsequent versions of Windows. An Android-compatible version was introduced in 2015.

Reception

[edit]

In 2020, the consumer organization Stiftung Warentest included Salfeld Child Control in a comparative evaluation of parental control software[3][4][5][6]. The software received favorable ratings for options allowing detailed customization of screen time and application access, as well as for its user interface and approach designed to encourage educational dialogue.

However, Stiftung Warentest emphasized the inherent limitations of parental control software: such programs cannot comprehensively address risks like cyberbullying, unsolicited online contact, or all forms of abusive content. The report suggested that technical controls should be combined with communication and education regarding digital media, and highlighted the importance of respecting children's privacy when using these tools[7].

Klicksafe, an initiative of the European Union, also assessed Salfeld Child Control, positively noting its interface and flexibility[8]. Nevertheless, reviews identified technical limitations, such as some delays before content filtering is applied, difficulties filtering within certain social media applications, and default activation of detailed activity logs. Experts cited by Klicksafe recommended moderation in use to prevent undermining children's autonomy or the parent-child relationship.
