Sava Arsić (Serbian Cyrillic: Сава Арсић; 5 May 1760 – 27 March 1824)[1] was a Serbian merchant and lessee,[2] who became a town captain at the beginning of the 19th century of the city of Arad, in the era when the Banat was in the possession of the Habsburg imperial dynasty.[3]
Biography
[edit]He was born to a Serb family in Arad, modern-day Romania.
As mayor, especially due to the merits of founding and opening the Preparandia (Teacher's College), Sava was ennobled by the Viennese court. He was mayor of Arad between from 1814 to 1818 and from 1821 to 1823, and director of the Arad's Teacher's College, known as Preparandia in Romanian and Serbian.[4]
In 1815, Sava Arsić, the mayor of Arad, decided to grant eight acres of land to each teacher, regardless of denomination.[5][failed verification]
He was married to Eustahija Arsić, a well-known Serbian writer.
The tombstone of Sava Arsić, former mayor of Arad, is built into the wall of the Serbian Church in Arad.[6]
