American Opera Singer

Shauna McCarthy (Zitron) is an American opera singer known for her dramatic coloratura soprano voice. She has performed at major venues, including five appearances at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, where she portrayed Vitellia[1][2] in La clemenza di Tito, Donna Anna[3] in Don Giovanni, Manon[4] in Manon (with the Metamorphosis Chamber Orchestra), Lakmé[5] in Lakmé, and Hanna Glawari[6] in Die lustige Witwe. At age 16, she also appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood under Michael Tilson Thomas for the televised Leonard Bernstein Gala Birthday Performance, celebrating his 70th birthday, performing “Kaddish 2” from Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3, ‘Kaddish’.[7] She is a recipient of the Distinguished Musician Award from the IBLA Grand Prize – Bellini International Vocal Competition.[8]

McCarthy graduated from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where she performed with Eastman Opera Theatre.[9] She later studied with the legendary soprano Anna Moffo.

Early Life and Debut

[edit]

McCarthy made her stage debut at age 5 and began performing full operatic roles as a child. From ages 11 to 14, she portrayed Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors, followed by Despina in Così fan tutte at 15. At age 16, she also performed the role of Marguerite in Faust, all with the Connecticut Opera Alliance.[10] By her late teens, McCarthy had already garnered early recognition for her vocal talent.

Breast Cancer and Retirement

[edit]

Shortly after her fifth performance at Carnegie Hall, McCarthy was diagnosed with breast cancer, leading to her retirement. Now nearly eight years into her breast cancer survivorship, she is making her way back to the stage.[11]
