The Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) is the government body responsible for the operation and development of mass transit systems in the Sindh province of Pakistan. Established in 2015, it aims to provide modern, sustainable, and efficient public transportation for urban areas, particularly in Karachi.[1]

History

The Sindh Mass Transit Authority was founded with the goal of reducing traffic congestion and pollution in urban areas of Sindh, particularly in Karachi. The initiative includes the development of multiple Bus Rapid Transit BRT lines, electric buses, and other transport infrastructure aimed at improving the efficiency of public transport.[2]

Routes

The Sindh Mass Transit Authority currently operates several bus routes in Karachi, utilizing both traditional and electric buses. These routes are color-coded to help passengers easily identify the correct buses for their destinations

Future Routes

The SMTA is working on expanding the network to include additional routes and services across Karachi and other major cities in Sindh. These future routes will utilize electric buses, contributing to the reduction of urban pollution.[3]

Objectives

Recent Developments

    • Expansion of People's Bus Service**: In October 2024, the Sindh government announced plans to procure 50 new buses to expand the People's Bus Service, aiming to modernize public transport in Karachi and provide affordable and comfortable travel to citizens.[9]
    • Transfer of Green Line Bus Service**: In October 2024, the Sindh government finalized preparations to assume control of the Green Line Bus Service from the federal government, with the transfer scheduled for December 2024. This initiative is part of efforts to enhance Karachi's public transport system.[10]
    • Inauguration of Command and Control Centre**: In November 2024, the Sindh Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Memon, inaugurated the Command and Control Centre for the People's Bus Service. This centre aims to monitor and facilitate the operations of the bus service across Sindh, ensuring timely instructions and addressing passenger complaints.[11]
