Smile.io is a Canadian software company that develops customer loyalty program tools for e-commerce businesses. Founded in 2010, it enables merchants to implement points-based rewards, referral programs, and VIP tiers. It is headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario.[1]

History

Smile.io was launched in 2010 as Sweet Tooth Rewards, a loyalty app built for the Magento platform.[2] In 2014, the company expanded its integrations to Shopify and BigCommerce.[1] It rebranded as Smile.io in 2016 to reflect a broader market focus.[1]

By 2025, Smile.io supported over 100,000 active loyalty programs worldwide.[3] The company is cited in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo article as a contributor to the local technology economy.[4]

An advanced product line, Smile Plus, offers enhanced features for larger retailers, such as analytics dashboards, customization options, and dedicated support.[5] Smile.io is also used by e-commerce businesses to increase customer retention and repeat sales by implementing loyalty points, referral incentives, and branded reward programs.[6]

The platform integrates with Shopify, BigCommerce, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, and other marketing tools.[7]

Leadership and community

Smile.io's co-founder and CEO Mike Rossi has been profiled by the University of Waterloo for his role in leading the company from a student startup to a global platform.[2] In 2024, Smile.io joined the Council of Canadian Innovators.[10]
