Spells of Genesis is a 2017 freemium blockchain-based fantasy tactical arcade game developed by the Swiss-based game studio EverdreamSoft and published by Channel 4's All 4 Games.[1]
Technology
[edit]The game utilizes the Bitcoin Counterparty meta-protocol to allow for optional decentralized digital card ownership and trading[2][3] as well as having its own cryptocurrency, BitCrystals (BCY), which can be used to buy and sell their blockchain cards.[4][5]
Gameplay
[edit]Spells of Genesis combines TCG mechanics with arcade-style shooting gameplay and role-playing game progression.[6]
Players collect, upgrade, and fuse in-game and blockchain-based cards to build powerful decks used to battle enemies in both campaign and challenge modes. These cards represent characters living in the world of Askian, a Bitcoin-inspired fantasy world, and card spells include various attributes such as rarity, strength, and special abilities. Strategic deck-building is essential, as different enemies require varied tactical approaches. Players can enhance their cards by fusing duplicates or upgrading them using resources gained from battles.[7]
Battles are played in short levels where players use a slingshot-style mechanic to launch cards at enemy targets, bouncing off walls and obstacles for strategic advantage. Game progression, based on these battles, involve unlocking new regions, battling increasingly difficult foes, and acquiring rare cards.
History
[edit]In March 2015, before the first alpha version of the game was live, the first Spells Of Genesis blockchain card was released, limited to 300 units.[8]
In July 2015, EverdreamSoft crowdfunded 974 Bitcoins (~$300,000 at the time) towards developing the game.[9][10]
In February 2016, the game entered beta release.[11]
In December 2017, the ability to "blockchainize" (fuse an in-game card into an NFT) up to three cards per month was added to the game.[12]
By early 2018, 44% of players had purchased or traded cards on the blockchain over the past 12 months, with cost and complexity being the two main barriers for the other 56%.[13]
In 2022, EverdreamSoft launched an Askian-themed world in the immersive metaverse game The Sandbox.[14]
