Spize

[edit]

Jonathan William Zorr Jr (born 22 October 2004) , known professionally as Spize, is a Liberian singer, songwriter, and performing artist. In March of 2024, he signed a record deal worth L$20million with LIB Muzik, a prominent Liberian record label based in the USA.[1][2] He is best known for his 2024 debut single “Melo”[3] and his follow-up track “My Side.[4] His music blends Afrobeats, Afro-pop, R&B, Dancehall, and Kolo-pop artist.

Early Life and Background

[edit]

Jonathan William Zorr Jr, professionally known as Spize, was born in Monrovia, Liberia, and raised in the suburb of Congo Town. In his early years, he was widely known as a talented soccer player, with many expecting him to pursue a professional career in football. However, his interests later shifted toward music, a passion he attributes to the influence of his late mother, who was an avid music enthusiast.

Spize’s musical journey began during his high school years, when he and his friends Boulevard and A-Nas began performing together under the name The Lonestar Legends. Though not a formal group, the trio sang under the shared name before going their separate ways in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic.

After this period, Spize gained recognition by releasing freestyle covers of popular songs, including JZyNo’s “Butter My Bread” and “Eyes on You”, Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, and Asake’s “Lonely at the Top”. These renditions, shared across digital platforms, helped him build an initial fan base and positioned him as a rising talent in Liberia's contemporary music scene.

Career

[edit]

In March of 2024, Spize signed a groundbreaking deal worth L$20 million with U.S based Liberian record label LIBMuzik,[5] after being discovered through a “Melo” snippet video on social media by CEO Al Johnson.

Thereafter, Spize debuted with his breakout single "Melo",[6] gaining attention for its smooth blend of Afrobeats and romantic lyrics. His follow up single "WIth You", produced by A.Cool and Gege blends Afro-pop and R&B elements, showcasing his versatility as an artist.

On December 13, 2024 he released his third single titled "My Side",[7] a tribute to his late mother and it gained over 50,000 streams on Audiomack within a week of release.

Recognition

[edit]

Spize's rising popularity led to a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2024 Liberian Music Awards, alongside other rising stars such as Fluxii and Mr. Church. [8] His debut single Melo was also nominated for Afro-pop song of the year alongside JZyNO's Eyes on You ft. Camidoh and Cralorboi Cic Congratulations.[9]
