Subatra Robert is a Franco-Indian actress who has been predominantly working on Tamil-language films, known for her performance in several critically acclaimed films such as Vada Chennai (2018), Periyerum Perumal (2018), Karnan (2021) and Jai Bhim (2021). Apart from Tamil, she has also contributed as a theatre artist in French cinema.

Early Life and Education

Subatra Robert is a Franco-Indian actress currently based in Chennai, India. Originally from Pondicherry, Subatra moved to France at the age of 6. She completed her schooling in France from IFSI de La Croix Saint Simon[1] and worked as a paramedical professional from nearly nine years.

In 2011, she returned to India and became actively involved in child welfare initiatives. Over the course of three years, she collaborated with various NGOs, focusing on supporting physically challenged children, as well as Irular and other tribal children and orphans.

Career

Subatra's acting career began in 2013 when she was first casted by Paul Mignot for Believe (2014) a short film in French shot in Puducherry, India[2]. Eventually she joined Indianostrum Theatre[3] and worked with director Koumarane Valavane[4][5] and preformed in Dreams of Tipu Sultan[6][7], a devised play that explored the themes of capital punishment and mob psychology. She continued her work in theatre for four years, during which she collaborated with renowned French director Ariane Mnouchkine, contributing to the production department in four of her plays. Additionally, she attended three session of L'Ecole Nomade[8][9], organized by Theatre du Soleil under Mnouchkine's guidance.

Her first significant breakthrough[10] in cinema came with her role in the Tamil film Kabali (2016) directed by Pa. Ranjith. She went on to feature in a series of critically acclaimed films including Vada Chennai (2018), Pariyerum Perumal (2018), Karnan (2021), Jai Bhim (2021), Witness (2022), Natchathiram Nagargirathu (2022) and Bommai Nayagi (2023)[11] and web series Label (2023). Subatra's performance in Jai Bhim garnered widespread praise,[12] cementing her reputation in Tamil Cinema. She continues to focus and work on films that address socially relevant themes.

Her diverse career spans Tamil and French cinema, highlighting her repertoire by venturing into Malayalam Cinema with the upcoming film Dear Students, starring Nayanthara and Nivin Pauly. Additionally, she is working on the Tamil remake of the film Tentigo (2023), produced by Stone Bench Creations.

Subatra remains actively engaged in theatre production. Her artistic journey also encompasses a deep commitment to traditional performing arts, having trained in various disciplines including improvisation, Kathakali, Therukoothu and the ancient martial art form of Kalaripayattu. Apart from Tamil and English she is proficient in French and is active in France theatre spaces.

Beyond acting, Subatra has worked as an executive producer for a number of International and Indian film projects. Some of her notable contributions include: Delsafio (2015) produced by Caracol TV, Colombia, a short film by Alain Deymier, French Director and Photographer.
