Sujata Tibrewala
Sujata Tibrewala, also known as Sujata Pratibimba, is an Indian-American ecofeminist artist, engineer, and activist. Her work explores themes of gender equality, environmentalism, and cultural identity through painting, poetry, and interdisciplinary projects. She is the founder of the BrownWomenInArt movement and the Indian American Artists' Association (IAAA).
Tibrewala was born in 1977 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. She earned a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and later completed a Master's in Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.[^4]
Work
[edit]Tibrewala's art is deeply influenced by her background in mathematics and engineering, as well as her experiences as an Indian-American woman navigating cultural identity.[1][2] Her work reflects a synthesis of Indian folk traditions and contemporary feminist discourse, often incorporating eco-spiritual themes.[3]
Tibrewala's work explores themes of gender equality, environmental justice, and diasporic identity.[4] She describes her practice as carrying an "ecofeminist consciousness," exemplified in her series "Annapurna" (addressing farmers' rights) and "Tri Femme" (exploring intergenerational womanhood).[5] In these works, she examines the intersection of ecological and social systems, particularly focusing on marginalized communities.[6]
Tibrewala has received recognition from the Silicon Valley Art Council (2019), the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis (2017), and was an artist-in-residence at the Kala Art Institute, Berkeley (2016).[7][8]
Her work has been featured in publications including the Hindustan Times,[9] Indian Express,[10] Deccan Herald,[11] and BroadwayWorld.[12] She has been profiled in feminist art anthologies and her writings on art and activism appear in academic journals.[13]
