Sun Reserve Concept
[edit]The Sun Reserve Concept is a marketing initiative launched in 2025 by the beer brand Corona, owned by AB InBev. It involves the acquisition of air rights over a coastal property at Piedade Beach, located in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Brazil, with the goal of preventing vertical constructions that could obstruct sunlight on the beach.
Context
[edit]Urban development along coastal areas has raised concerns about reduced public access to sunlight and changes to local ecosystems. High-rise constructions near beaches often create shadows that affect beach usability and the natural environment. One notable example is Balneário Camboriú, a coastal city in southern Brazil known for its beachfront skyscrapers, where excessive shading prompted local authorities to undertake a beach widening project to mitigate the loss of sunlight.[1]
The Sun Reserve Concept addresses these concerns by legally purchasing the air rights of a seafront property, aiming to maintain an unobstructed view of the sun for beachgoers. The property was acquired for a limited number of years under a private agreement with the landowner. The initiative was supported by the local government of Jaboatão dos Guararapes.[2]
Reception
[edit]The project received coverage from Brazilian media outlets such as Diário de Pernambuco, Jornal do Comércio, and Veja Rio, which described it as a creative method to raise awareness about urban impacts on coastal environments.[3] While the initiative attracted public attention, it primarily serves as an awareness-raising effort rather than a structural change in [[urban development]] policies.
