Texas Gun Rights (TXGR) is a Texas-based 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization advocating for Second Amendment rights. Founded in 2014 as a state affiliate of the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), TXGR became an independent entity in 2023. The organization is headquartered in Weatherford, Texas, and operates alongside two affiliated groups: the legal and educational Texas Gun Rights Foundation (501(c)(3)), and a political action committee, Texas Gun Rights PAC.

Mission and Philosophy

[edit]

Texas Gun Rights describes itself as a nonpartisan grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to defending and expanding individual gun ownership rights. The organization follows a "no compromise" philosophy, opposing any form of gun control legislation and lobbying against incremental infringements. TXGR distinguishes itself from other gun groups by refusing to support what it terms "access-based lobbying" or backroom political deals."About Us". Texas Gun Rights. Retrieved 2025-05-21.

Legislative Victories and Advocacy

[edit]

Constitutional Carry

[edit]

TXGR played a central role in passing Texas House Bill 1927 in 2021, which legalized permitless carry of handguns for those 21 and older without a license. The organization had promoted the idea since 2015 via legislation filed by then-State Rep. Jonathan Stickland and Sen. Don Huffines. TXGR mobilized activists, submitted over 118,000 petitions, and helped author a key amendment that blocked municipalities from opting out."About Us". Texas Gun Rights. Retrieved 2025-05-21."Texas becomes 21st state to allow permitless handgun carry". The Texas Tribune. June 16, 2021.

Red Flag Law Opposition

[edit]

TXGR was a leading supporter of Texas Senate Bill 1362 (2025), also called the Anti-Red Flag Act, which criminalizes enforcement of out-of-state or federal red flag laws and prohibits Texas agencies from accepting related federal funding. The group provided testimony and public outreach, including support from Outreach Director Kyle Rittenhouse."Kyle Rittenhouse testifies at Texas Capitol in support of anti-red flag bill". FOX 7 Austin. March 10, 2025."Texas Red Flag Law Moves at Odds With Public Opinion". Newsweek. May 2025.

Gun-Free Zone Restrictions

[edit]

TXGR opposed a 2024 decision by the State Fair of Texas to ban legally carried firearms, calling it unconstitutional. The group supported legislation to prohibit taxpayer-funded entities from enforcing such bans, which passed the Texas Senate and advanced in the House."Texas lawmakers push back on State Fair gun ban". The Texas Tribune. August 12, 2024."Texas AG Ken Paxton appealing judge's ruling on State Fair of Texas gun ban". WFAA. September 20, 2024.

Kyle's Law

[edit]

TXGR supported HB 170 ("Kyle's Law"), providing civil immunity to individuals who are acquitted or not charged after lawful acts of self-defense. The legislation was indirectly inspired by the case of Kyle Rittenhouse and passed committee hearings with TXGR's backing."Texas Lawmakers Advance 'Kyle's Law'". Ammoland. April 15, 2025.

[edit]

Forced Reset Trigger Settlement

[edit]

In 2025, TXGR and the National Association for Gun Rights reached a legal settlement with the Department of Justice over the ATF's attempted ban of forced reset triggers (FRTs). The agreement required the ATF to cease enforcement and return all seized or surrendered FRTs."DOJ Announces FRT Settlement". U.S. Department of Justice. May 16, 2025.

Pistol Brace Ban

[edit]

TXGR's affiliated foundation secured a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit challenging the ATF's 2023 reclassification of pistols with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles. The Fifth Circuit ultimately struck down the rule in Mock v. Garland, siding with gun rights groups."Fifth Circuit Strikes Down Pistol Brace Ban". Texas Gun Rights. August 2023.

Policy Positions

[edit]

Public Engagement and Leadership

[edit]

In 2024, TXGR hired Kyle Rittenhouse as Outreach Director. The organization stated that his self-defense experience and public engagement record would enhance grassroots mobilization.Briggs, Shakari (June 11, 2024). "Texas Gun Rights names Kyle Rittenhouse new outreach director". Houston Chronicle.

The organization also runs regular Capitol Lobby Days and has collaborated with groups such as True Texas Project and Gun Owners of America for public mobilization campaigns.

2024 Trump Endorsement

[edit]

In July 2024, TXGR issued its first formal endorsement for a political candidate, supporting Donald Trump for President after internal backlash arose over critical remarks by Outreach Director Kyle Rittenhouse. TXGR President Chris McNutt clarified that the group traditionally avoids endorsements but took a position due to public confusion."TXGR Endorses Trump". X (Twitter). July 2024.
