UpCloud is a privately held European cloud service provider headquartered in Helsinki, Finland. The company offers infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) with a focus on high performance, privacy, and competitive pricing. It operates 13 global data centers, providing cloud computing solutions for developers and businesses.

History

[edit]

UpCloud was founded in 2012 by Joel Pihlajamaa to provide scalable cloud infrastructure services. In its early years, the company emphasized privacy and performance as its key differentiators in a competitive cloud computing market dominated by large US providers.

In 2014, UpCloud began expanding internationally, launching its first data centers outside Finland in London and Chicago. This expansion was accompanied by a strategy targeting privacy-conscious customers by storing customer account information in Finland under Finnish law, even when hosting data in international locations.

UpCloud raised €4 million in funding in 2016, led by Inventure, to support its international expansion.[1][2]. In 2021, the company secured an additional €18 million from Connected Capital, Finnish Industry Investment, and Inventure[3][4].

Services and Features

[edit]

UpCloud provides a range of cloud computing solutions targeted at developers and businesses.

The company also emphasizes high performance by using proprietary software and solid-state drives (SSDs) for storage, offering consistent performance compared to competitors like Amazon Web Services (AWS), where performance fluctuations are a common customer complaint[5].

Privacy and Security Focus

[edit]

UpCloud’s emphasis on privacy gained prominence following revelations of global surveillance practices by the NSA[6]. The company allows customers to host data in its Chicago data center while ensuring the customer’s account information remains protected under Finnish law. This approach caters to privacy-conscious clients seeking alternatives to US-based cloud providers.

Competitive Positioning

[edit]

UpCloud targets both price-sensitive and performance-conscious users by offering infrastructure at a lower cost than competitors. For example, the company’s SSD storage prices are up to 40% lower than AWS. In addition to cost advantages, UpCloud's data redundancy systems automatically synchronize data across two backends to ensure reliability[7].

Growth and Expansion

[edit]

As of 2023, UpCloud operates 13 data centers globally[8], including locations in Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company has stated its intention to expand into new markets, including Asia, to establish itself among the global leaders in cloud computing[9]
