Whimsical is a collaborative software platform that combines project management, documentation, diagramming, whiteboarding, wireframing, and team communication tools in a unified workspace. It is designed to streamline workflows by reducing reliance on multiple applications and supporting structured, asynchronous collaboration.
The company was founded in Denver, Colorado, and operates with a fully remote team distributed across the world. Whimsical has maintained a small team size, emphasizing asynchronous communication and long-term sustainability over hyper-scaling.
Features
[edit]Whimsical’s core products—Boards, Docs, Projects, and Posts—provide tools for moving from initial ideas to project execution within a single platform. The products are designed to support a unified workflow and minimize context switching between separate applications.
Boards
[edit]An infinite canvas for flowcharts, mind maps, wireframes, sticky notes, and other forms of visual thinking.
Docs
[edit]A collaborative document editor that supports a wide variety of content blocks, live embeds, and real-time editing.
Projects
[edit]A project management tool designed to keep tasks and planning connected to their broader context.
Posts
[edit]An asynchronous communication tool for sharing updates, decisions, and check-ins, with an optional Slack integration.
Whimsical AI
[edit]Whimsical AI is integrated across the platform to enhance key workflows. Capabilities include generating diagrams from natural language prompts and suggesting task titles.
History
[edit]Whimsical was founded in 2017 by Kaspars Dancis and Steve Schoeffel, two entrepreneurs with a shared interest in improving remote collaboration and reducing the cognitive load of scattered workflows. The company launched with a visual diagramming tool for flowcharts.
In November 2021, Whimsical announced its first round of outside funding: a $30 million Series A led by Accel.[1][2] Additional participants included Basis Set Ventures and company executives from Dropbox, Stripe, GitHub, and Google. Prior to this, the company had been entirely bootstrapped and profitable since its early days. Accel partner Dan Levine, who joined Whimsical’s board, described the company as offering a foundational product for remote-first teams, comparing it to tools like Figma and Notion in its focus on speed and simplicity.[3]
