Widnes Rugby Union Football Club is a rugby union club from Widnes in Halton, Cheshire.
Widnes Rugby Union Football Club was founded in 1925.
First Team
Second Team Widnes seconds were relegated from Halbro Division 1 in 2013/2014. They suffered another relegation from divison 2 in the 2014/2015. The following season Dan Newall was appointed head coach as the seconds continued to struggle. They would have also faced relegation for a third successive season the following year. They went to Brougton Park on the last day of the season and although they did suffer a loss they stayed in the division on points difference thanks to a late try from Captain Josh Paton. They would go onto win the Division 3 South Championship in the 2016/2017 season while also reaching the Cup Semi Final suffering defeat away to Penrith. Newall would leave his position after a 6th place division 2 finish in 2017/2018 with Adam Watson taking over as head coach. Watson guided the 2s to a 7th place finish and a cup semi final the following season and then a 6th place finish in covid interrupted 2019/2020 season as they established themselves in division 2.
With covid restrictions over for the beginning of the 2021/2022 season Newall would return to the club to take charge once again with Watson now serving as the team’s forwards coach. Taking a place in the newly formed Lancashire ADM Premiership Widnes would be neck and neck with Aldwinians for the entire season. Their final game of the season saw them face Aldwinians at Heath Road knowing a draw or a victory would see them crowned Champions. However is was the Manchester side who took the victory and the league title with a 20 - 12 win.
Another excellent run of form saw Widnes win the ADM premiership the following season. They would lose only 1 game in the entirety of the 2022/2023 season winning the league title in the final game of the season away at nearby Sefton. Widnes would also go on to claim a place in the ADM Major Cup final after beating local rivals West Park 44 - 25 at Heath Road. The final would follow the next week with a game played at West Parks Red Rocks against Aspull. The Wids would claim victory and the cup with a 25 - 20 win with a man of the match performance from Dec Rice.
Newall would leave the club at the end of the season with both forwards coach Adam Watson and backs coach Matty Walker standing down from their roles.
Former player John Parker would take the reigns for the following season and the second team returned to division 2 of the Halbro set up finishing mid table.
Injured player Josh Kenyon would take charge of the side for the 2024/2025 season with Matty Walker installed as the teams captain. Widnes would lose only 3 games in the league that season to win the Halbro division 2 north title and also reach the semi finals of the cup but would lose to Congelton at Heath Road.
Third Team Widnes Third team won the 2016/2017 Halbro Division 5 West under the captaincy of John Paul Flavour.
Former Colts coach Lee Martindale would be appointed third team coach ahead of the 2021/2022 season with Sharon Miller managing the side to a forth place finish in Division 4 West.
Another strong league campaign followed at Martindale guide his side to the Halbro Plate final. Beating birkenhead park in the quarter finals. Then a semi final win over Glossop 35 - 12 saw them advance to the final. However they would fall to defend in the final against Northwich in a game played at Leigh RUFC
