YANSHANG is a Chinese tea company founded in 1998 by Guoying Liu, a senior agronomist, and master of Wuyi Rock Tea crafting techniques.[1] Renowned for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship, YANSHANG emphasizes a philosophy of "tea before commerce," reflecting a deep connection between tea and nature.[1][2]
Liu, one of the first inheritors of the intangible cultural heritage of traditional Wuyi Rock Tea (Da Hong Pao) tea-making techniques, unveiled the acclaimed "Kong Gu You Lan" in 2008, which symbolizes the balance of steadfastness and aspiration inherent in the brand. YANSHANG operates under the guiding principles of sustaining through quality and advancing through reputation, focusing on the meticulous refinement of raw materials and craftsmanship while honoring traditional methods and embracing innovation. [1]
History
[edit]In 1998, Guoying Liu, a distinguished senior agronomist and a pioneering figure in the Wuyi Rock Tea tradition, founded the Yanshang brand. Liu is also recognized as an inheritor of Wuyi Rock Tea's Intangible Cultural Heritage.[2] Yanshang was established with the founding philosophy of focusing on excellence rather than expansion, captured by the phrase, “not aiming for expansion, but focusing on excellence.[2]” The brand integrates tea cultivation, craftsmanship, appraisal, education, research, and dissemination. [2]
The Yanshang tea plantation is located in the core region of Wuyi Mountain, near Dawangfeng and Yunu Peak, which is known for its unique terroir. Yanshang emphasizes sustainable practices, with the tea gardens being harvested only once a year during spring. The plantation follows an organic ecological management model, avoiding the use of chemical pesticides and relying on organic fertilizers such as rapeseed cake and soybean meal. The entire process, from cultivation to craftsmanship, adheres to traditional methods, with thirteen intricate processing steps, ensuring the production of authentic Wuyi rock tea.[3]
In 1992, recognizing the need for improved tea-making techniques, Liu founded the Yanshang Tea Science Research Institute in 1998. The institute serves as both a production hub and a research center, focusing on the development and dissemination of tea-making skills.[4]
In 2020, Liu Guoying's daughter, Liu Yibai, introduced the Yanshang Xin Zhou brand, which launched the first hanging ear rock tea.[5]
"Kong Gu You Lan" (Orchid in the Silent Valley) is a Wuyi rock tea that was first crafted in 2008 by Master Liu Guoying. It is known for its expression of the natural characteristics of the Wuyi mountains, using carefully selected raw ingredients and traditional craftsmanship. The tea is often described as having a balance of rich yet delicate flavors, with a light yet profound profile.[6] [7]
The tea is produced using methods that prioritize quality, including selective harvesting during clear weather, light roasting over charcoal, and precise production techniques to maintain the tea’s aroma over time. The result is a tea that evolves in flavor, maintaining its distinctive qualities rather than reverting to a grassy taste. [7]
"Kong Gu You Lan" is often associated with the historical significance of Wuyi rock tea, which was historically considered a prestigious tribute tea during the Qing Dynasty. [7]

Under his leadership, YANSHANG introduced its signature tea, Kong Gu You Lan, in 2008, which has become highly acclaimed for its quality and connection to traditional Chinese tea culture.[9]
Development and operations
[edit]Yanshang's development began in 1998, with the official registration of the Wuyishan Yanshang Tea Science Research Institute in 2000. The institute integrates several aspects of the tea industry, including planting, processing, evaluation, training, scientific research, and promotion. Over the years, it has conducted various experiments, such as improving rock tea processing technologies, selecting and breeding Wuyi tea varieties, and testing new tea cultivars in regional trials. The institute’s tea garden bases are located within the scenic areas of Wuyi Mountain, benefiting from the unique terroir and traditional tea processing methods that characterize Wuyi rock tea.
