The period from 161 BCE marks the arrival of Jason ben Eleazar and Eupolemus ben Yochanan, who came as emissaries of the Maccabees to form an alliance with Rome against the Seleucid Greeks.[citation needed] The initial Jewish settlers in Rome were primarily diplomats and community leaders who moved to the city to maintain and strengthen the newly formed alliance.[6][3][1][2] Over time, these early settlers established a small but significant Jewish community.
