The vessel was constructed at Ihi Marine United Tokyo Tokyo, Japan in 1986, and was originally named Virginia Rainbow for Japanese owner Tokai Shipping Company.[2] In 1993 the ship was sold to German owners and renamed Fenella, always sailing under Liberia flag.[4]
