Maldivian parliamentary election

The Maldivian parliamentary elections determine the composition of the People's Majlis for the next five years.[1]
Eligibility
[edit]The Parliamentary Elections Act lays out the requirements for parliament candidates:[2][3]
- is a citizen of the Maldives;
- is not a citizen of another country;
- is a Muslim and a follower of a Sunni school of Islam;
- has attained the age of 18 (eighteen) years; and
- is of sound mind.
They'll be disqualified if they:[2][3]
- has a decreed debt which is not being paid as provided in the judgment;
- has been convicted of a criminal offence and is serving a sentence of more than 12 (twelve) months;
- has been convicted of a criminal offence and has served a sentence of more than 12 (twelve) months, and a period of 3 (three) years have not elapsed since his release or pardon for the offence for which he was sentenced; and
- is a member of the Judiciary.
Runoff elections
[edit]During the parliamentary elections, if an electoral constituency has more than one candidate that got majority votes, a runoff election is held within fifteen days the official results of the election has been announced by the Elections Commission (EC).
Procedure
[edit]Nomination of candidates
[edit]Candidates can either choose to run as independent or be nominated by a political party. Political parties hold primaries in each constituency and whoever gets the popular vote of that primary represents the party for that constituency in the election.
Candidates for the parliamentary elections must pay a deposit of Rf. 5,000, and if they're independent, along with the deposit they have to submit a statement signed by fifty adults who are above 18 from the constituency they're running for to show they support the candidate. The statement must have their full name, identity card number, permanent address must be included.
