NBA Martin Luther King Jr. Day games
Games held by the National Basketball Association (NBA) on Martin Luther King Jr. Day have been an annual tradition since 1986 when it was first observed as a federal holiday (with the exception of 1999 during the 1998–99 NBA lockout).[1] Unlike the more select number of Christmas Day games, more teams participate for that day.[2] Very often a rematch of a playoff series in the previous season's NBA playoffs is showcased on MLK Day. They have also traditionally included one game hosted by the Atlanta Hawks (with some exceptions when they were either a visiting team or did not play on the holiday at all) to mark Atlanta being Martin Luther King Jr.'s hometown. The Memphis Grizzlies have also been hosting games annually since they relocated from Vancouver (with two exceptions in 2002 and 2017). Memphis was where King was assassinated in 1968.[1][3] [4] The New York Knicks also have played annually, although for not any official reason to commemorate King like the Hawks or the Grizzlies, also most commonly as a home team.[3]
Broadcasting
[edit]Like most other days during the regular season, only selected games are televised nationally, and the rest of the contests are only available on local broadcast stations or regional sports networks within their respective local teams' media markets.[citation needed]
Unlike NBA Christmas games, nationally televised Martin Luther King Jr. Day games have historically only been aired on cable instead of broadcast television. And prior to 2003, they were only sporadic. TBS aired a doubleheader during the NBA's first year of holding Martin Luther King Jr. Day games in 1986, then aired one game in 1987. But it was not until 1994 that a nationally televised game was scheduled again, airing on TNT. Another drought occurred until TBS aired a doubleheader in 2000. After another drought lasting two years, TNT was given the rights to annually air games starting in 2003. NBA TV also given games from 2009 to 2010, and from 2023 to 2025. And from 2011 to 2016, ESPN also aired one game per season.[citation needed]
Under a new 11-year deal, NBC will air the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day doubleheader from 2026 to 2036.[5]
