Progressive Utrecht Subversive Centre for Information Interchange (PUSCII) was a free Internet workplace and hacklab that operated from 1999 (though first officially opened in 2000)[1] until 2007 in Utrecht.[2][3][4] It was Utrecht's first Internet café and served as a meeting point for squatters, media activists, and open source enthousiasts. After 2007 it became a hosting collective without its own physical space.
Like its Amsterdam-based sister project ASCII, PUSCII operated in squats.[5] It started in the Ubica squat, and in 2005 moved to Stationsplein 7[6], eventually getting evicted in 2007.[7][8]. In 2013, it made a brief reappearance in the Ubica[9].
PUSCII was part of the plug'n'politix network[10], connecting several similar initiatives throughout Europe.
Activities
[edit]In its early days, PUSCII was mostly focused on providing free internet access. After the move to Stationsplein 7, sharing a space with the Weggeefwinkel resulted in more attention to hardware recycling. After the eviction of Stationsplein 7, the main focus became maintaining a server for hosting activists.
PUSCII has organised many workshops and discussions on technology and politics. It stayed active at Dutch and German hacker events, as well as activist gatherings.[11][12][13]
