Pascual Berrone (Mar de Plata, 1975) is a Spanish-Argentinean and Italian professor and editor. A member of the faculty at IESE Business School, he holds the Schneider Electric Chair of Sustainability and Business Strategy. He is an author and editor for leading academic journals.[1]

Education and professional career

Berrone obtained his PhD in Business Economics and Quantitative Methods from the Carlos III University of Madrid,[2] after completing a degree in Business Administration at the Catholic University of Córdoba and a degree in International Business and Management at the FUNCER Business School (Siglo XXI University).[3]

Throughout his academic career, he has been a visiting professor at academic institutions, including Arizona State University (United States), Concordia University and Simon Fraser University (Canada), as well as Nanyang Business School (Singapore) and Imperial College (United Kingdom).

At IESE Business School, he has been the director of the strategic management department since September 2024, and was the academic director of the Executive MBA from 2018 to 2022.

His area of research covers corporate governance, sustainability, business strategy and family businesses. He has been vice-president of the Iberoamerican Academy of Management (2011-2019),[1] and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Management, Strategic Management, and Journal and Management Research. He has also been an editor of other academic publications, such as Family Business Review (2011-2013), and associate editor of Organization & Environment Journal (2013-2016). He is co-director of the IESE research platform "Cities in Motion".

Research and publications

Pascual Berrone's research has focused on the impact of sustainability on business strategy, and on how family businesses and multinationals manage environmental and corporate governance challenges. With over 40 scientific articles, his work has been published in academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal, Research Policy, Organization Studies, Strategy Science, California Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management Studies and Family Business Review, among others.[4]

Berrone has directed and participated in  research projects financed by international organizations. Among them, GrowSmarter (Horizon 2020, European Union) stands out, a project focused on the development of sustainable urban strategies in Europe.[5] He has also led the research "Greenwashing and Corporate Sustainability, a study on the credibility of companies' environmental initiatives", financed by the BBVA Foundation.[6]

One of its main contributions is the IESE Cities in Motion platform, a project that analyzes urban sustainability and the management and development of cities worldwide. The study evaluates different socioeconomic development indicators such as capital, social cohesion, governance, sustainable development, mobility and transportation, urban planning, international projection and technology, providing a comprehensive view of competitiveness and sustainable development in different urban environments around the world.[7][8]

Awards and recognition

Throughout his research career, Pascual Berrone has received different academic awards: Best doctoral thesis (2009) awarded by the Academy of Management,[9] the IBM Faculty Award (2015),[10] and the “Research Excellence Award” from the IESE Alumni Association (2012, 2018 and 2024) among others.[11]
