The Pujiang Viewing Platform is an architectural project designed by the Dutch firm MVRDV, located in Pujiang County, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. The structure serves as both a visitor destination and an event space, capitalizing on the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.[1]
Design and architecture
[edit]The design features an arched pavilion covered with an earth berm, allowing the structure to blend seamlessly into the hillside. This design not only integrates the building into its environment but also provides insulation and thermal mass, reducing the impact of temperature fluctuations. Inside, the roof ascends as the floor descends, following the natural slope of the hill.[2]
Sustainability features
[edit]The Pujiang Viewing Platform incorporates several sustainable design elements:
- Biodiversity: The earth-covered roof hosts local plants, supporting the existing ecosystem.
- Water Management: Rainwater and greywater are collected and reused for irrigation purposes.
- Energy Efficiency: The structure is powered by solar panels with on-site storage, and features natural ventilation and shading to minimize energy consumption.
- Material Use: Timber arches are used in the construction, reducing the embodied carbon footprint.[3]
Construction progress
[edit]As of January 2025, construction is progressing rapidly. The timber structure has been placed, and the project is taking shape. The design enhances the existing path network, connecting to a second viewing platform and improving accessibility.[4]
