Occupation(s)Founder and Executive Chairman of Puncak Niaga Holdings; Executive Chairman of SYABAS

Rozali bin Ismail is a prominent Malaysian businessman, founder, and Executive Chairman of Puncak Niaga Holdings.[1] He also serves as the Executive Chairman of Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (SYABAS),[2] a water concession company that was nationalized by the state of Selangor in 2017.[3] Additionally, he is the President of the Malay Business Association of Selangor (DPMMS).[4]

Career and Financials

[edit]

Rozali Ismail was listed as one of the 40 richest individuals in Malaysia in 2011,[3] with an estimated net worth of $155 million.[5] His compensation packages, including RM 5.1 million in 2009 and RM 33.4 million in 2012, drew public criticism due to perceived shortcomings in water services provided by SYABAS in Selangor.[6][7]

Puncak Niaga

[edit]

Puncak Niaga, founded by Rozali in the 1990s,[8] played a pivotal role in early water concessions in Kuala Lumpur. Rozali's close ties with Selangor politicians enabled him to facilitate public-private partnerships and influence the adoption of a three-stage water treatment scheme in the region.[9]

Puncak Niaga is the parent company of SYABAS.[3] In October 2015, both companies were taken over by the Selangor state government.[10] In 2018, Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor (SPLASH) filed a lawsuit against SYABAS, claiming RM 4.22 billion in outstanding receivables. According to Tan Gim Tuan, chairman of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), SYABAS had reported significant annual losses since the government takeover. Tan further warned that the lawsuit could potentially lead to state bankruptcy.[11]

Leadership Roles

[edit]

Rozali Ismail has held several leadership positions throughout his career. He served as the President of the Water Association of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya, and as Deputy President of the Malaysian Water Association.[12] He was also the treasurer of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) Selangor, UMNO Hulu Selangor Division, and represented Selangor State at the Malay Chamber of Commerce.[4]

In addition, Rozali serves as an adviser to Sultan Idris Shah Polytechnic.[13] He is the Chairman of Gabungan Wawasan Generasi Felda (GWGF), a coalition of 14 non-governmental organizations advocating for settlers and their families nationwide, estimated at around 600,000 people. In 2017, Rozali was called upon to disclose details about a controversial RM200 million land sale involving Felda's property in Jalan Semarak.[14] In 2018, he announced GWGF's continued support for the Barisan Nasional coalition and the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) during Malaysia's 14th general election.[15]

Awards and Recognition

[edit]

Rozali Ismail was honored with the Socrates Award, which recognizes business leaders who have contributed innovative ideas and experiences to the international community. He is also an advocate for promoting Malaysia's economy, politics, education, and culture on the global stage.[16][17]
