Sayyid Mahmud Agha was a Sufi from South Asia. He was the brother of Sayyid Mir Jan and acted under him as a saint of the Naqshbandi Sufi order. Together with his brother, he preached the teachings of their ancestor Khawand Mahmud, known by his followers as Hazrat Ishaan.
Biography
[edit]A descendant of Bahauddin Naqshband after 7 generations was Hazrat Ishaan,[2][3] Sayyid Mahmud Agha and his descendants later immigrated to variable regions of South Asia, like Afghanistan in order to spread the Naqshbandiyya Sufi order's teachings.[4][2][3][5]
Sayyid Mahmud Agha's followers call him Noorun ala Noor (light upon light).[6][7]
Death
[edit]Mahmud Agha died in Lahore in his twenties. Allegedly, after his death, his Hindu, Sikh and Muslim followers clashed, wishing to bury him in accordance with their respective religions.[7] Sayyid Mahmud Agha is buried in Begampura, Lahore next to his brother Sayyid Mir Jan. His death anniversary is commemorated with short prayers called Zikr.[6][7]
