Shahbagi
Shahabagi (Bengali: শাহবাগী) is a slur used to refer left wing in Bangladesh.[1] The word originated from 2013 Shahbag protests where leftists and Communists protested for hanging of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami politicians.[2] The term generally refers to individuals with Anti-Islam attitude in Bangladesh.[3]
Origin
[edit]The term Shahbagi was based on 2013 protest at Shahbagh which began at the call of the Bloggers and Online Activists Network, demanding the execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah. Later it was known as the Ganajagaran Mancha led by various secularist and left wing organizations.[4] The protests was organised by various Atheist, Secularist, and Anti-Islam bloggers and activists.[5][6][7]
Usage
[edit]Shahbagis are introduced as "unhygienic". Aftermath of July Revolution a Anti-Shahbagi platform named a cow Shahbagi and bathed it with a banner behind written "গোসল কর শাহবাগী" (Take bath Shahbagi).[8][9]
In December 2024, In a seminar Mamunul Haque referred Shahbagis as Atheists created by Awami League to eliminate Islamic values.[10]
On 16th December rally Jamat Amir Shafiqur Rahman urged Shahbagis to also be brought under justice.[11][12]
In January 2025, in a exhibition held in Dhaka, Shibir used “take bath Shahbagi” slogan. Later in a conference at Jahangirnagar University Shibir Central President Jahidul Islam said it was referred to purifying Bangladesh's politics from fascism.[13] Later in a Facebook status he called Shahbagis as 'agents of fascism' and responsible for establishing fascism and Islamophobia in Bangladesh through ideological hegemony.[14]
In March 2025, Shahbagis were widely criticised after few policemen were beaten in a left wing protest.[15][16] Quota protest coordinator Abu Shadik Kayem criticised Shahbagis following the attacks on police.[17] Hasnat Abdullah also criticised Shahbagis in a Facebook post.[18] Following the attack Comilla University students raised various Anti-fascist slogan opposing Shahbagis.[19] Protests were held at other universities demanding arrest of left-wing activist Lucky Aktar calling her Shahbagi and a fascist accomplices.[20][21][22]
In a interview Inquilab Mancha spokesmen Sharif Osman Hadi made remarks saying Shahbagis destroyed law and order in Bangladesh.[23]
In April 2025, Students Against Discrimination spokesperson Umama Fatema supported the controversial report proposed by Women's Affairs Reform Commission. Following her support netizens who opposed the commission labeled her Shahbagi. In a Facebook post she opposed the label.[24][25][26]
