[edit]The 1971 city election also saw a plebiscite on whether to build a convention centre. It was approved in the plebiscite, then approved again in a 1979 referendum (on its own page in the Edmonton election sequence), built and now named the Shaw Convention Centre. The 1979 vote was held on Nov. 28, and newspaper coverage will support this historical fact. August 9, 2007 Edmonton Real Estate Weekly, "It's our Heritage," has a good write-up on the decade-long debate with four or so ballot questions on the issue.
