Is the statistics table necessary?
[edit]I can see the rising number of deaths and cases. The table might attract readers, but is prose enough to help readers understand the topic without the table? --George Ho (talk) 04:27, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
- Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa uses a table. If the outbreak persists long enough it might be worthwhile setting the table to be collapsed by default. JKDw (talk) 06:09, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
Source in Table
[edit]I do not think the source in Table is needed because all of the source are from the Ministry of Health and Welfare as written in the body text. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.189.254.4 (talk) 05:01, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. I made that column by the apparently false assumption that there would be different sources for different updates. JKDw (talk) 11:41, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
Sources
[edit]To Phoenix: Your logic is off for retaining Korean sources. When updating vital statistics, editors of English Wikipedia should not have to retain a source, no matter how "official" it is, if they cannot read that source (i.e... if it in Korean). In fact, it may be deceptive, if that source doesn't give that updated information. Information deserves to be updated in a timely fashion, and pages shouldn't have to wait for you or any other editor to do updating. I thank you for your attention to this matter, and for your attention to this important page, and the good work you've done. But please try to think of the English (only) speaking audience here. Thank you. 147.46.57.248 (talk) 01:48, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- Please note that your source lasts only a day while the official source lasts forever. If you wish to add a daily source, please add not replace the official source with it and update three descriptions (lead, infobox, and table) in the article. Also please don't use List-defined references because it is not easy to replace or delete the reference.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 02:17, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. But it does not address the problem I talked about. You are forcing sections of the article to rely on a Korean source, when English sources are available. Also, as I stated above, retaining a Korean source when information is updated may not be accurate, as the new information may not be reflected in that source.147.46.57.248 (talk) 02:36, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- You should not complain without seeing the official source. The official source link points to a list of press release and no.93 is a report of June 23. All the news reports are based on the report. You should not remove the source.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 02:46, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- I have seen the source. (Obviously. How else would I know it's in Korean.) The source was, and remains, in Korean. I repeat, you are forcing this Korean source on an English page, when other English sources exist.147.46.57.248 (talk) 04:03, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- See above. I didn't say I am "forcing this Korean source on an English page". I am asking not to remove the official source. You can add an English source if you want. In doing so, please do not use List-defined references because the source lasts only a day.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 04:13, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

The Ministry of Health source is also in English. I suspect it is the only original and authoritative source. Aren't others using the Korean MOH as the original source? BTW, I think the numbers are off in the table. The press release for June 24 shows 179 cases, 27 deaths (cumulative). As of 13:39 UTC there is no release yet for June 25. It is now 22:39 in Korea. juanTamad 13:41, 25 June 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jtamad (talk • contribs) The 180 is from the WHO site and includes a case in China (http://www.wpro.who.int/outbreaks_emergencies/summary.of.MERS.stats/en/). I think this is the source, not the MERS page in Korean (http://english.mw.go.kr/front_eng/sg/ssg0111ls.jsp?PAR_MENU_ID=1001&MENU_ID=100111). juanTamad 13:47, 25 June 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jtamad (talk • contribs)
- The press release by the Ministry of Heath and Walfare is original. The WHO page is a translation from a MH&W page as indicated in the WHO page. The English page of the MH&W is a translation of a summary of the Korean press release. As often the case, there is a delay to reflect to the translation page. The official press release is published at 8:30 (Korea Standard Time UTC+9) in the morning as described in the attached file (.hwp) at the bottom of the press release. (You may not be able to read the file. You can download a converter for Microsoft Windows.) The attached file has more information than the html page. i.e. It includes a list of statistics and charts from May 20.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 20:17, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, the MOH page you linked to is the best source, the only original probably. I think the totals should be reduced by 1. The 181 includes a case from May 29, of a Korean who went to Hong Kong and then inland and became the first case in China. (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/05/29/us-health-mers-southkorea-china-idUKKBN0OE0SK20150529). juanTamad 03:33, 26 June 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jtamad (talk • contribs)
- He (#10) was infected with MERS from his father (#3) at Pyeongtaek St. Mary’s Hospital and went to China where he was diagnosed with the disease. So there is no problem including him in the cases of the outbreak of Korea.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 04:15, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- The WHO includes the Chinese case, but the Korean MOH does not. I was thinking it might be better to report the data from Korean MOH since that is the referenced source. Either way, just my preference. You could note that WHO totals include one additional case. JingJohk (talk) 02:32, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- The Korean source includes a case in China. See Korean WH&W page. There is a note "* 중국 입국 양성 확진자 1명 퇴원 포함" (Includes a case hospitalized in China) at the bottom of the page.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 03:03, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- I was looking at this page: http://english.mw.go.kr/front_eng/sg/ssg0111ls.jsp?PAR_MENU_ID=1001&MENU_ID=100111 JingJohk (talk) 03:38, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Both pages show the confirmed cases are 182 which means the page you indicated includes a case confirmed in China.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 04:00, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

A ring or donut graph
[edit]The WHO used a ring or donut graph to show cases, deaths (http://reliefweb.int/sites/reliefweb.int/files/resources/sudan%20yellow%20fever.pdf). I think it's kind of a striking image, although I know data viz gurus would say use a bar chart. Works better for the recovered, dead, under treatment data, sinceit's clear that deads are not within recovereds like deads are included in cases in the other graph. Adding information on the government response
[edit]It seems like this article is lacking information on the government's response to this outbreak. Such information could be added either under the "Effects" section or under its own heading. Is there a need for this information? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlevi (talk • contribs) 12:02, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Jlevi: The Korean Wikipedia article has some article pertaining to this in the "reactions" section. It also notes international reactions to the outbreak. We could incorporate information from there. Unfortunately, the sources are in Korean so we could have to go through the tedious process of checking every reference and trying to interpret the broken translations that Google offers. Elspamo4 (talk) 15:38, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info. I might vet the information in a day or two.
