ethnicity
[edit]Is Chavez Chicano or Hispanic -- I can't find info on his family's ethnic heritage, and in New Mexico, there was a BIG difference between being Spanish and being Mexican! Aristophanes68 (talk) 03:31, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
He is Spanish, and i happen to be his youngest sister's granddaughter. so if you still can't find information on him and would like some, i would be willing to e-mail it to you. :) Bluespanisheyes3 (talk) 04:09, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Article name
[edit]He wrote the book Chávez: A Distinctive American Clan of New Mexico by Fray Angelico Chavez. Obviously he, and his publishers (W. Gannon of Santa Fe, New Mexico), know what an á is:
- They used it in the title of the book
- They did not use it in the author's name
Here is the book's Library of Congress Card Catalog listing. The Library of Congress uses even letters that aren't individual characters in Unicode (even in this case, they have overstricken an á character with an acute accent character, must have something to do with working on various platforms and character sets. If there were an á in the authors name as listed in the book, it would appear in this catalog.
Here is an image of the book's cover at Amazon.com.
The article should be at Angelico Chavez in accordance with our naming conventions. Gene Nygaard (talk) 14:52, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- I agree, and I've seen this fact mentioned in scholarship. I've redirected the page. Aristophanes68 (talk) 21:17, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- Here's a scholarly acknowledgment: In the preface to her book Brothers of Light, Brothers of Blood, Marta Weigle notes that he dropped the accent marks (xiii). Aristophanes68 (talk) 21:38, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
plagiarism or source?
[edit]I notice that several of the sentences on this page are verbatim those found on this page, but I can't be sure which source borrowed from which (and I can't tell if the UNM page was written by Padilla). Help? If we plagiarized, then we need to rewrite those passages or cite them. Thanks, Aristophanes68 (talk) 05:06, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
