Meaning of "versions integration"

In the "Motivations for branching" section, what is meant by "versions integration"? The confusion arises because the two words link to different articles, and because a Google search of "versions integration" yields no clear result. Pretty far off the mark

"Branching is the duplication of an object under version control (such as a source code file or a directory tree). Each object can thereafter be modified separately and in parallel so that the objects become different. In this context the objects are called branches. The users of the version control system can branch any branch."

Object? They're files. And not just source code files. Files! Modified separately and in parallel. Huh? Object become different. Huh? The files (objects) are not the branch. The branch transcends files. Branch any branch. huh?

Why is this about 'branching' (verb)? Why not branch (noun)?
