Re: 1930 Gran Premio de Buenos Aires, 1932 Gran Premio de Buenos Aires

After spending considerable spare time on research and consulting with folks that have maintained major databases (they are posting at the AutoSport forum (forums.autosport.com), I can find no corroborating evidence that these 2 events took place in the form listed. A few sources point to the possibility that they were sports car races, yet specific searches have not produced even a hint of a link to their existence. Any combination of search specifics like race name, date, winning driver, winning car, etc. all eventually lead to similar results from 1930 Rosario-Santa Fe-Rosario or Automovilismo, Gran Premio Nacional , Buenos Aires (El Litoral, 25 de Enero de 1930) or 1929 Gran Premio Nacional - Buenos Aires-Cordoba-Buenos Aires (Chivilcoy Automovil Club).

Quoting a reply to my query at the above mentioned forum:

"The Buenos Aires GP of 1930 appears to me to be one of those fictional events which - through a sort of Chinese whispers process - has become accepted as fact. Jimmy Piget's list suggests that it was run on January 12th at Costanera and won by Juan Malcolm in his Delage 2LCV.

However, the January 13th issue of the Santa Fe newspaper El Orden has a photograph - but no report - showing the finish of the 'Carrera Rosario-Santa Fe' - presumably the previous day. This event appears to be identical with the 'Rosario-Santa Fe-Rosario', won by Lalo Destéfano, whose picture can be found in the January 18th issue of the Buenos Aires news magazine Caras y Caretas. On the same page there are pictures of the Carrera Standard del Chivilcoy Automovil Club - won by Juan Malcolm (but in a Mercedes).

Going back to Jimmy's list, we see a 'GP Provincia de Buenos Aires' listed as having been run at Chivilcoy on December 15th 1929, won by Raúl Riganti in a Hudson adaptado. However, this appears to be a further confusion with the 1929 Gran Premio Nacional!

Domingo Bucci (ScuderiaBucci.com) mentions that (1929 Gran Premio Nacional and 1930 Rosario) were among his most important races. [1] [2]

I've looked around for Sports Car specific data and all I can come up with is the list published at informulas.com.ar. They list only one Buenos Aires event for 1930, won by Domingo Bucci / Desoto (no date or exact location given) and the following for 1932:

  • 3/6 Gran Premio “Ciudad de Buenos Aires”-Categoría “A” Buenos Aires Domingo Bucci De Soto
  • 3/6 Gran Premio “Ciudad de Buenos Aires”-Categoría “B” Buenos Aires Juan Malcolm Maserati
  • 3/6 Gran Premio “Ciudad de Buenos Aires”-Fuerza Libre Buenos Aires Domingo Bucci De Soto
  • 5/6 Categoría “A” Buenos Aires Domingo Bucci De Soto
  • 5/6 Categoría “B” Buenos Aires Victorio Cóppoli Bugatti
  • 10/7 Fuerza Limitada Arrecifes Eduardo Pedrazzini Ford
  • 4/8 Reunión Apertura del Autódromo de San Martín Buenos Aires Domingo Bucci De Soto [3]

Again, as with all Sports Car racing resources, no trace of anything for January 12, 1930 or October 5, 1932 at BA. The same problem turned up for the 1942 Buenos Aires Grand Prix [4] The only mention of a 1932 Buenos Aires Grand Prix at Costanera (sur) that I could find is at Juan-Augusto Malcolm / Pilotos Muertos [5] (not 1930 as listed - last paragraph, bottom of page). Loosely translated:

"Some of the cars of Augustus John MALCOLM. In order: 4 cylinder Stutz 2 in the Prize II Fall 1925 (where he did not finish). Mercedes-Benz SSK # 6 in the second Grand Prix of Buenos Aires Province 1929 (not finished). Mercedes-Benz 680S MALCOLM black that had led Argentina in 1928 and which competed at the Circuit of Cremona in 1929 and the second Grand Prix of Buenos Aires Province 1929 (abandonment in both), and won in 1930 Chivilcoy; National Grand Prize in 1930 (pictured, No. 20) also abandoned. We then see the copilot confident in the Spring 1930 tour, aboard his Maserati Tipo 26B # 8 which qualified 3rd after Zatuszek and Carú; this car overturned on the Costanera Carrasco (Montevideo) 1932 and in July of that year was 2nd in a (sleeve?) Grand Prize, City of Buenos Aires, Costanera (Sur) won another and joined 2nd in the final after Bucci. Then it is masked in the Bentley 4 ½ l with which participated in the 1932 National Grand Prize. Finally, and again with the Maserati Tipo 26B, Argentinas 500 Miles in 1935, where again he was lucky".

I recommend to remove these 2 line items and maybe store them here until positive evidence can be obtained.
