Although the release date for this game is widely cited as 1996, even by General Mills, it is evident from the contemporaneous sources already cited that this was released in 1997. This includes articles referring to the promotion in future tense from early 1997, as well as another that speaks of the campaign as ongoing as of August that same year, obviously far away from 1996 if the campaign was only six weeks long as otherwise stated. Furthermore, the first mention on the alt.games.doom newsgroup (FREE CHEX QUEST GAME INSIDE CHEX QUEST CEREAL BOXES!!!!!) is from 1997-07-22, which supports a mid 1997 release.
The confusion may stem from the file modification date on the CD-ROM for the WAD being given as 1996-10-31. As of this post, that is the date currently given as the release date. While there is no dispute that the build was finalized on that date, it is not even the most recent file on the CD-ROM itself; the installer was built on 1996-11-11. This is to say nothing of the monumental task that would be involved to go from disc master to store shelves in under 24 hours.
