Reviewer: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs) 13:55, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
- I propose to take on this review. Here are a few opening observations before I read through the article in detail. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:55, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
- The Pampas section has the subheadings in a different order from the other sections.
- Done Switched to ensure subheadings are in a proper order
- The lead section is supposed to be a summary of the rest of the article, but in this article it is a sort of overview and mentions all sorts of things by way of background that are not in the body of the text. See Manual of Style/Lead section
Working on it.- I changed the lead section. It includes a summary of the climatic details from the 6 regions. I decided to create one paragraph for northern Argentina (with definitions), one for central Argentina and one for Patagonia in the south. As well I removed the major factors affecting the climate of each region. I could not find anything for this topic and even if I did, I think it would be repetition. Let me know if there are any deficiencies in the new lead section and I will be happy to fix it.
- Having stated in the lead that the major factors affecting the climate of each region are "latitude, altitude, the migration of the South Pacific and South Atlantic highs and the Andes", you do not always mention these features when you come to discuss the regions. I think there should be a short introductory statement for each regional section dealing with the geography of the region.
- Deleted this sentence as you said it looked like an overview which was what I wrote this sentence about. Could not find any good reliable sources mentioning how the major factors influences the climate of each region.
- Although the images are obviously chosen with care to illustrate the different regions, I think the captions should mention the region by name. The caption for the first image in the Patagonia section is better than the first caption in the Cuyo section, for example.
- Done Changed captions to indicate region name if possible.
- I will wait for your response to these points before continuing my review. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:55, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback. I will try to fix them as soon as possible. Cheers. If you have any questions regarding the climate data for each section, bring it up to me since I know how these numbers were obtained. Cheers Ssbbplayer (talk) 20:40, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
First reading
[edit]- In Chaco, the sentence starting "During the entire year ..." is too long and complex and needs to be broken up.
- I removed the part on "which can penetrate the region owing to the influence of the Andes". That would be confusing to readers. I changed "producing" to "bringing" and broke up the sentence into 2 sentences.
- Temperatures: Where the stated temperature in °C is a whole number, I think you should not convert it to a °F figure that includes a decimal point. For example, 43 °C (109 °F) should be used rather than 43 °C (109.4 °F). The same applies to the temperature sections of other regions.
- Done Fixed precision issues. Please check if I am missing any. For the sentence saying that most precipitation events in Patagonia are usually less than 5 mm (0.2 in) , I had to use 1 rather than 0 since it seems incorrect to say that 0 inches of precipitation fall.
- In Northwest, "Cold fronts that travel northwards to the region produces precipitation during summer and is more prominent in the southern parts of the region." This sentence needs attention.
- I broke the sentence into 2 sentences and reworded it to "Southern parts of the region are influenced by cold fronts travelling northwards. These cold fronts are responsible for producing precipitation during summer." What I am trying to say in that sentence is that the cold fronts are another factor in producing precipitation in addition to orographic precipitation, convective thunderstorms from ITCZ, and the usual moist winds from the east brought by the South Atlantic high (with the Chaco low enhancing this process in summer).
- In Cuyo, the sentence that starts "Most of the precipitation falls during the summer..." is too long and complex and needs to be broken up. It also duplicates some of what was said in the previous sentence.
- I shorten it to "Most of the precipitation occurs in summer due to the interaction between the Chaco low and the South Atlantic High."
- The conversion 100 to 500 mm (3.9 to 19.7 in) would be better as 100 to 500 mm (4 to 20 in).
- Done Fixed that issue.
- "This wind often precedes following a cold front passage ..." - I don't understand this statement.
- Oops. I meant to say that this wind often occurs before the passage of a cold front across Argentina... Ssbbplayer (talk) 03:08, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- In Pampas, "... a low pressure system situated over northern Argentina ..." - I assume this is referring to the "Chaco low". Having introduced this weather system near the beginning of the article, there is not really any need to reintroduce it repeatedly with regard to each region.
- Yes. The low pressure system over northern Argentina is the Chaco low. I removed it but kept the fact that precipitation in summer is high and occurs mainly as thunderstorms.
- I removed the repetition of "a low pressure system in northern Argentina" or some variant of it in the sections following it (eg. Northwest Argentina and Cuyo in particular). I did fixed and clarified on how the role of the Chaco Low in bringing in precipitation by stating that summer rainfall is higher due to a stronger interaction (which I did not mentioned previously) and that winters are dry due to these systems weakening. It is only in the Chaco section. I am still working on trying to remove repetition.
- In Patagonia: Precipitation, the first two sentences should be combined into one.
- Done Merged 2 sentences into one. I kept the citations
- In the whole article there is inconsistency about capitalising "Ocean".
It should be capitalized if it refers to Atlantic Ocean or Pacific Ocean or otherwise, normal capitalization roles. Working on it.- Done Fixed that. For anything saying "... the ocean", changed it to "...surrounding oceans" (only in Patagonia section). I hope that did not changed the meaning.
- In the "notes" section, there is inconsistency as to whether the word "province" has a capital letter or not.
- Done Fixed any inconsistencies in both the notes section and the entire article. If it specifically refers to the name of the province (eg. Salta Province), it is capitalised.
- Finally, looking back at the lead I find it much improved. However this sentence, "Its climate is classified as a temperate to cool temperate climate with the Atlantic Ocean moderating temperatures on the coast", needs attention because Patagonia has two coasts.
- I tweaked the lead sentence to "Its climate is classified as a temperate to cool temperate climate with the surrounding oceans moderating temperatures on the coast" as the first one seems inaccurate (forgot about the southernmost islands).
- That's all for now. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:11, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
I'll take the time to fix these issues. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:17, 10 February 2016 (UTC)- Update: I have tried to address most of these issues and fixed them. Let me know if flaws in any of these remain and I will fix it. The only one where I need to fix is the Chaco Low issue. Hopefully, I will try to finish it as soon as possible. Ssbbplayer (talk) 02:33, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
- I think it's looking pretty good, and the only remaining issue that I can see is inconsistency in how you capitalise Chaco Low, South Atlantic High, South Pacific High, subpolar low etc. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:54, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
- Done I fixed this issue and checked it. Ssbbplayer (talk) 01:28, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

- The article covers the main aspects of the subject and remains focussed.
- The article is neutral.
- The article is stable.
- The images are relevant and have suitable captions, and are either in the public domain or properly licensed.
- Final assessment - I believe this article reaches the GA criteria. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:11, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
- Closing comments Thank you for supporting me through the GA review. I really liked how these recommendations allowed me to fix problems and deficiencies in the article as well as Cwmhiraeth copyediting it. It made the GA process easier while encouraging me to improve on it. Being my first GA article that I have significantly contributed (credits also go out to other users who added links, copyedited, citations, and the editors from the Guild of Copyeditors that recommended me to create this article), I hope to see you again in any future GA reviews. Thanks. Ssbbplayer (talk) 16:35, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
