Factual Edits July 2016

[edit]

I work at Cognita and parts of this page are out of date. I plan to make a handful of minor edits to clarify the number of schools with the Cognita group, ensure all are linked and correct, and include information regarding Cognita's history and present leadership. Do let me know if you have any issues with my edits. Thanks.

See also section

[edit]

This article has no 'See also' section; how about adding one with Gulen movement schools and maybe Waldorf education (along with, eventually, any other big players?) What do you think? I wouldn't want to step on the toes of any major donors or someone else that could make trouble for us, or closer to home, me here. 55378008a (talk) 07:05, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Edits July 12, 2017

[edit]

I am making edits to repair a number of issues on this page. These include removing text where the references are 'red herrings'...ie the reference article does not correlate with he information or the claim being make in the Wiki entry text or, more concernedly, the links don't actually exist/are broken.

I'm also tidying up some of the information to be up to date and factually correct and removed biassed and unreferenced info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GlobalEducation (talkcontribs) 21:22, 12 July 2017 (UTC) GlobalSchoolsWatch (talk) 22:21, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replace in Leadership:

The Group Chief Executive Officer of Cognita is Chris Jansen, who has over 20 years' experience in consumer products and service businesses and described by the Financial Times as “Cognita schools chief puts trust back in private model”. Prior to Cognita, Chris Jansen was Chief Executive Officer of the AA following six years at Centrica PLC, latterly as Managing Director of British Gas Services from June 2010 to July 2013. From 2000 to 2007, Mr Jansen worked for British Airways PLC, where he held a number of general management roles including responsibility for Concorde, global head of the Executive Club and Managing Director of Airmiles. Before British Airways, Mr. Jansen worked for Procter & Gamble for seven years from 1993, having joined on the graduate programme.[29][28] Mr Jansen is a member of the Corporate Partnerships Board of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.[30]

✅  Edit request partially implemented

  1. Red XN The claim regarding Centro Educacional Pingo de Gente & Laviniense could not be added because the Wikilinks for these schools have not been added with the request.
  2. Green tickY The number of schools was increased by one.
  3. Red XN The number of students and teachers was not changed. The current claim is that the provider "employs over 7,000 teachers and educates over 45,000 children". As the proposed numbers are over the amount specified in the lead section, the claim in that section is not factually incorrect.
  4. Red XN The claim regarding the CEO was removed as WP:PROMO.

1. Please find some additional information in regards to a request edit from 24 February 2020 that was unable to be actioned: Point 3 that the number of students and teachers was not changed - It is difficult to be exact with this information as the number of students and teachers within our schools group changes every 2 - 3 months. We use general figures so the information stays factually accurate for a longer period of time. Our current numbers are 50,000 students and 7,500 teachers. Reference: https://www.cognita.com/about/

2. May I request that the conflict of interest warning message at the top of the Cognita page - 'A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject' - be removed?

Following an edit requested on 24 February 2020, that was actioned 28 February 2020, the content that was causing this message has now been removed. The content on this page is no longer biased or self-congratulatory and is factually correct. Please let me know if you disagree. Thank you.

Request #1:  Implemented though I do see why Spintendo refused to do it, I think it's best to insert the latest numbers.
Request #2:  Declined I don't think you know why the maintenance template is there nor do I. As per WP:WNTRMT, you should not remove the tag if (other than having a COI) You do not understand the issues raised by the template. But it does seem like it is needed. look here. I'd let an uninvoled editor evaluate the issue and cleanup as needed.

I am requesting that the COI message at the top of the page be removed.

Following an edit requested on 24 February 2020, actioned on 28 February 2020, the content that was causing this message - self-congratulatory content within the Our Leadership section - was removed. The content on this page is no longer biased and is factually correct. Please can us let me know if you disagree and why? Thank you.

Not done No, for two reasons: 1) your edits are still very recent 2) you are the largest contributing editor of the article with 37.7% of all edits being yours. P,TO 19104 (talk) (contribs) 00:28, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request edit on 20 January 2025

[edit]

Hi, I am (Sgkthomas) and I would like to declare my conflict of interest. I work for Cognita. I would like to request the following edits to Cognita's Wikipedia article.

Edit requests to Intro, Early Life, Schools and Career sections; request for the addition of an Educational Approach section

[edit]
  1. In the introductory section at the top of the article, please replace the first paragraph with "Cognita is a global private schools group of over 100 schools. It employs over 21,000 staff and teaches 95,000 students across 17 countries. Cognita schools teach 13 different curricula, namely National, International Baccalaureate, American including American Education Reaches Out – Common Core Plus and Advanced Placement, Australian, Spanish, Chilean, Colombian, Greek, Mexican, Indian, Swiss, Italian, and Brazilian." (Sources: [1])
  1. In the introductory section, in the second paragraph, please remove "According to Cognita, it employs 15,000 staff and educates over 75,000 children.", since the updated information is now part of the first paragraph as per the above bullet point.
  1. The current article lacks any information about the teaching in Cognita’s schools or the approach that informs it. Please add the following sections above the "History" section:
    1. Educational Approach
      1. "Cognita’s holistic educational approach focuses on social, emotional, physical and cognitive learning to drive academic achievement and help students develop agency, adaptability and positive attitudes." (Source[2])
    1. Wellbeing and Global Be Well Day
      1. "Wellbeing is an integral part of holistic education at Cognita. Cognita has their own Be Well Charter, which outlines the main physical and mental contributors to wellbeing. They also run a regular survey for students aged 7 and over, which includes important questions about student care and wellbeing. Every year in September, Cognita celebrates Global Be Well Day. On this day, all schools organise activities and events focused on the main physical and mental contributors to wellbeing, to support the entire school community of students, parents and employees." (Source[3])
    1. Safeguarding
      1. "Cognita has policies, procedures, and training that place emphasis on child safeguarding. Every Cognita school has a regular independent safeguarding review." (Source[4])
    1. Sustainability strategy
      1. "Cognita published its first Sustainability report for 2023, which outlines their sustainability approach and strategy." (Source[5])
  1. In the "History" section, insert a subheading, "International expansion", before the paragraph that begins "In 2007..." (Reason: to add structure to the section, which is currently long and can be split up into more sections for easier reading.)
  1. In the "History" section, insert a subheading, "Sale to Jacobs Holding", before the paragraph beginning "In January 2018..." (Reason: to add structure to the section, which is currently long and can be split up into more sections for easier reading.)
  1. In the "History" section, insert a subheading, "United States", before the paragraph beginning "In September 2022..." (Reason: to add structure to the section, which is currently long and can be split up into more sections for easier reading.)
  1. In the "Controversies" section, we ask that the paragraph beginning with "Parents at Cognita's Saint Andrews Sukhumvit..." be completely removed. (Reason: there is no citation given for this claim in the Wikipedia article – footnote 41 at the end of the paragraph does not link to a working web page or any other content.)
  1. In the "Controversies" section, we would like to ask that the following claim be removed from the first paragraph: "Cognita was accused of pension irregularities in 2012." (Reason: the accusation in question is more than a decade old and never resulted in any formal investigation or charge from any external or government agency. Cognita’s Chief Executive at the time, Rees Withers, said that "there were no grounds to accuse Cognita of dishonesty": [6])
  1. In the "Controversies" section, in the first paragraph, we request that the following claim be removed: "In 2012, Cognita staff were instructed to impersonate parents and take tours of competing schools in Wales. This conduct was defended as a "normal" way of assessing the competition." (Reason: the practice described is the same as "mystery shopping", a market research tool used to collect information. It is therefore misleading to put this claim in a section labelled "Controversies" when it is neither a controversial nor uncommon practice – it misleads the reader into believing that something exceptional has occurred when this is not the case. As one mystery shopper firm explains, "Mystery shopping is a tool used by companies in all industries to measure service quality, compliance and obtain insight on products and services." [7])
  1. In the "Controversies" section, in the third paragraph, please change "Then Chairman Chris Woodhead denied the allegations, claiming that its profits were in line with others in the sector." to "Chairman Chris Woodhead responded that Cognita’s profitability was comparable to other private operators in the sector, and that the figures claimed by the parents’ group were inaccurate." (Reason: this is a more accurate formulation of what actually appears in the existing citation for the paragraph: [8]).
  1. In the "Controversies" section, in the fourth paragraph beginning "In 2014, the same school was accused of...", please add the following sentence at the end of the paragraph: "Ofsted has assessed Southbank’s safeguarding measures as ‘outstanding’." (Source[9]) This supplies more relevant detail to back up the preceding sentence.
  1. Please move the "List of Schools" section further up in the article so that it follows the "History" section. This is a more relevant ordering as the History section is closely related to the list of schools.
  1. Please add the following school to the "United Kingdom" subsection in List of Schools:
    1. Brighton College Prep Kensington[10]
  1. Please add the following schools to the "United Arab Emirates" subsection in the list of Schools:[11]
    1. Repton Dubai[12]
    1. Repton Al Barsha[13]
    1. Repton Abu Dhabi[14]
    1. Al Ain English Speaking School[15]
  1. Please add the following school to a new "Kuwait" subsection in the list of School:[16]
    1. Dasman Bilingual School[17]
  1. Please add the following school to a new "Greece" subsection in the list of School:[18]
    1. Doukas School<ref>https://https://www.doukas.edu.gr/<ref>
  1. Please remove the following schools from List of Schools:
    1. Hong Kong subsection: Woodland Pre Schools
    1. UK subsection: St Nicholas Preparatory School, Kensington, London AND Princes Garden Preparatory School, Westminster, London
    1. Brazil subsection: Colegio Maxi, Londrina, Paraná AND Maxi Global School, Paraná
  1. Please remove the following from Singapore section: ", opening in August 2020" referencing Brighton College, Singapore (rationale: has now opened (occurred historically))
